Aconis True Image Home 1012 Plus Pack, build 7119 not sending email notifications.

Thread needs solution

I just updated Acronis True Image Home 2012 Plus Pack to version "Update 2, build 7119". I noticed a couple of issues that I already had with previous builds still not working.

1. Acronis True Image Home 2012 Home Plus Pack, Upate 2, build 7119 is not sending email notifications even though I am sure the settings are correct and other programs (such as WinZip and SpeedFan) have no trouble sending notifications to the same email address with the same POP3 and SMTP settings).

2. Acronis True Image Home 2012 Home Plus Pack, Update 2, build 7119 is not SAVING the email notification settings (SMTP, POP3, Username, Password etc.). This could very well be cauing the issue, or is it not saving the settings because the email test fails?

I have a Charter email address with usual POP 3 and SMTP settings. Has anyone else had the same issues getting email notification to work?

Thank you.

Hi Ric,
Welcome to the forum.

Email notification:
The first line can be any address you have where you receive mail.

I don't have Charter but have you tried this setting for the Server setting

Server setting has to be your internet provider outgoing email

SMTP.CHARTER.NET (accept the port 25 default)
your charter email user name here without the @charter.net
Your charter password
try the test button.

Being unable to send email can also be a firewall or anti-virus restriction

I also have problem #2 with 2012 Home Plus Pack, Update 2, build 7119. I set everything to notify me about operation state in edit Disk Backup -> Disk Backup Options -> Notifications. I request a test message and everything works - test message is received. I click OK in Disk Backup Options and then SAVE in Disk Backup. When I open up edit Disk Backup -> Disk Backup Options -> Notifications again, everything is blank. Nothing was saved.

Yes, there is an issue with email notification but the problem may be different than being observed.

Results of my testing of 7119 using XP Pro.

(Assuming that you save the task after performing a successful notification test.)

1. If the test passes, you will get notification both of the test as well as well as when the backup runs. Notification will succeed.

2. If the test passes and you later reopen the same task, the user email notification will NOT appear and the screen will be empty of user data. This immediately implies that the information was not saved, however, if you open the saved task in Notepad, you will be surprised to find the notification information IS included as part of the contents of the folder.

Sample contents of backup script

<notify>
<email address="aghxxxxx@yahoo.com" enabled="1" encryption-type="none" from="" long_format="1" password="001F5tJuUDxxxxxxxxxssss6WD73rDLk7Km" pop-before-smtp="false" pop-server="" pop-server-port="0" server="outgoing.verizon.net" server-port="25" subject="Acronis True Image Home Notification Results" user="YOUR-EMAIL-NAME"> < notify_mode full_log="true" operation_complete="true" operation_fail="true" operation_message="true" />
</email>
</notify>

3. So the problem appears to be the lacking redisplay of the stored information but notification does work--at least for me.

If the notification test is not successful, then the issue could be several other factors--not necessarily Acronis. Adjustments may be needed within the Anti-virus or mal-ware program.

I set this up yesterday and I do an incremental backup every morning just after midnight. I did not have an E-mail this morning so I checked the logs and the backup was successful. When I looked this morning at the backup options I noticed everything was blank. I assumed that I forgot to press SAVE so I did it again. That is when I noticed that checking again latter everything was blank. It is still possible that I forgot to select SAVE yesterday so I will see what happens tomorrow morning.

I am running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit with an Intel i7 extreme processor.

I have not been able to locate the backup script to view it. Do you know where they are saved on a Windows 7 system? What is the file type?

I also noticed in your script that there is a variable for operation_fail that is set to true. Can I manually edit the variables in the script? I only want to get E-mail in the event of failure but I did not see a way to select that from the option settings.

I think I have found the files in C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts. There are 2 files with a type of .tib.tis. They both are created at the same time when I update the options. One file is 4 KB in size and it has the proper notify information. The other file is 2KB in size and the fields for are NULL. The large files appears to be the backup script and the small file is the validation script.

I will check in to morning to see if I get an Email.

figure 13 at this link illustrates how to set notification as part of each backup task. After you add the settings and test it, you can also "save as default" for future use.

http://forum.acronis.com/forum/28705

Yes, you found the scripts. Editing is sometimes possible but Win & and XP could differ. My example is X P Pro.

Please edit your post #4 and remove my emal listing goof. I did not intent it to be left there. Change my email name to something else. Thanks.

Just wanted to say I noticed this same problem after applying update 2 this past weekend. The email settings test fine but don't save. Oddly enough I did get an email when I ran a backup manually then cancelled it manually (terminated by user interaction), but then restarted it and never got a finished email (but the backup finished successfully).

If I have the time I'll take a look at the backup scripts and see if I can insert the email information directly.

Also setting it to "save as default" doesn't fix it, nor does resetting all the settings to default and reentering the email information.

I received an Email after the incremental completed early this morning. I must have not clicked "Save" when I set everything up on Sunday.

When I examined my scripts yesterday after clicking "Save" my Email information was correct, however, displaying the options always shows blank entries.

I will check for my Email every morning this week for the incremental and for the full backup on Saturday.

Little story about how I got here.

I have been using Acronis on this HP HPE490t since I purchased it October 2010. I do daily incremental and weekly full backups to an external eSata 2T drive. The good news is that after the weekly is done on Saturdays, I manually copy the full backup to my Synology NAS.

On 5/12 I came into my office and some USB devices were not functional. I have 5 USB hubs on this system and I discovered the power supply for one of the hubs failed. While troubleshooting this problem I must have bunked the eSata connector on the back of the computer (these connectors do not have any latching mechanism - the connector was in the socket but not fully seated).

On 5/19 I came to my office and found a message that a restart was needed because updates had been installed - don't remember what was updated. I attempted reboot and the system hung, only option was power off which marks the RAID drives as "dirty". This system has 2 1T drives running RAID Mode 0 and a full test and repair of the "dirty" drives takes about 8 hours to complete. This recovery runs in the background and really sloooows down the system.

I tried to boot again and the same problem. I thought no problem, a full backup should have completed early that morning and I had not done any work yet so I will just do a restore from the full backup. I booted the Acronis rescue disk and could not find my backup drive. That is when I discovered the loose eSata connector. I reseated the connector and tried again. Still no backup drive. It appears that the Rescue CD for the version of Acronis I was running did not know how to deal with an external eSata drive (I was still running the initial release of 2012). However, Acronis could find the backup on my Synology NAS from 5/12. I did not want to loose a week of work, so before doing the restore I did a full backup of the system to a temporary directory on the Synology NAS, this would allow me to recover any files modified between 5/12 - 5/19. After the backup completed, I did a restore from the 5/12 backup and then extracted all of my modified files from the temporary backup made on 5/19. I still have the temporary backup saved in case I discover I forgot to restore any needed files.

This is when I decided that I needed to monitor for successful completion of each backup. Had I been monitoring I would have know on the morning of 5/13 that there was a problem. Once I had everything working, I updated Acronis to "Update 2" in the hopes this would fix the issue with the external eSata not being managed by the recovery CD (I have not tested this yet, I will do that next Saturday after the full backup). This system is really loaded and a reboot takes almost 4 minutes even with the Intel i7 six core Extreme processor and my full backups are almost 200G each. I looked at the documentation for Acronis and setup my Email notifications. Click the test button and everything worked so I assumed all was well. I must have forgotten to click the "Save" button. I deleted all of the current incremental backups so that a full backup would be forced the morning of the 21st. No Email the morning of the 21st, however, the full backup did complete without error.

It was at this point that I discovered that even after click on "Save", the notification panel always contains Null information. That is when I discovered this forum thread. Hopefully the full backup scheduled for 5/26 will also send me an Email (I verified that the proper information is in the backup script).

I have 5 USB hubs on this system

Here are two hubs which has worked very well for me.
Belkin 7 port usb hub; all usb2 (used on an xp pro system)
http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-Hi-Speed-USB-7-Port-F5U237-APL-S/dp/B0009I…

-------------------------------------------------------

SIIG 7 port usb hub; (used on a ASUS laptop win7 with usb3 connector
4 USB2 PORTS; 3 USB3 PORTS

http://www.siig.com/superspeed-usb-7-port-hub.html

In addition to your loose wire issue, I have found many of this type issue--even with the power connectors as well. The power connectors which look like ps2 come loose very easy--even the eSata's..

I have a 7 port D-Link USB Hub on the way from Amazon. It should be here tomorrow.

I had very early 4 port USB 2.0 hubs on this system only because I had them. When the USB 2.0 spec was released I did some work for Kawasaki Micro Electronics designing their USB 2.0 > 100T Ethernet Adapter reference board, writing the adapter firmware and the certified Windows Device Drivers. We had to test with most of the Hubs available so I still had a bunch of them around. That was almost 10 years ago so a power supply failure was no surprise.

26/05/2012 I notice that since installing update to version 7119 that following a “clone settings” the “notifications” settings are lost in the clone. Happened on several machines. Spent a couple of hours googling and investigating.
Here are my findings:

1) Acronis 2012 TI HOME ver 7119 does NOT CLONE the settings in the Notifications tab of Backup Settings from a backup initiated in ver 6131.
2) Acronis 2012 TI HOME ver 7119 does CLONE the settings in the Notifications tab of Backup Settings from a backup initiated in ver 7119.
3) No backups in ver 7119 show values the settings in the Notifications tab of Backup Settings from a backup initiated in ver 7119.
4) The script from
* a partition backup as it was in ver 6131is compared to
* the script of that partition backup after cloning by ver 7119 and compared to
* the script that was cloned having the settings manually entered into the Notifications tab of Backup Settings
and the script straight after cloning (the middle one in the attachment below) CLEARLY SHOWS no population of the data fields has occurred
5) Logs were taken during testing which confirmed that emails were sent even tho no settings are visible in the the Notifications tab of Backup Settings. Other logs clearly show no emails being sent from cloned backups which have not had the notifications area manually populated if the pre cloning backup was initiated in ver 6131
6) See Acronis bug 2012-05-26.pdf attached

In a task's Disk Backup Options, you have the option to check the box "Save the settings as default" to save the current settings as your default. As discussed above, if you enter your email settings in the Notification tab and save them as default, when you reopen the task your email settings are blank. They actually are saved but Acronis fails to displayed them.

If you think about it, you really need a separate method of viewing, changing, and saving default settings. Most programs have this; Acronis does not. Here's one of the reasons for a separate method.

When you create a new task it should open showing you the default settings. When you modify the settings, save it, and reopen it you should see the saved settings. If you don't have a separate method of viewing your default settings, the only way to tell what they are is to temporarily open a new task. Then if you want to change the defaults, you have to check the "Save the settings as default" box, save the task, and then delete the temporary task.

So are the steps to fix this to edit every backup job and set as default? I have 17 jobs, is there a script editor to simplify this? THANKS

vpaul,

In each of your tasks, you can edit the settings and fill out the email notification tab, and then save the task. The email notification settings will be saved for that task only. You would have to do this for each of your tasks that have already been set up. When creating your next new task, be sure to fill out the email notification settings tab as well as any other tabs and select the options your wish to be used as a default when creating future tasks, and select "save as default". After that any new tasks will start with the options selected and saved as the defaults. You can edit the script files with a text editor, but you may find that simply editing each of the tasks in True Image is easier and quicker. I have had to do this, and I created a text file that I kept open with the email notification settings in it, so I could just copy and past the data in the fields during the task settings editing. It really shouldn't take long to edit your tasks. Once they are created, you can only edit each task to make changes, there is no way to assign new backup options to all of your tasks simultaneously.

James

Why isn't there a fix for this yet? It's been over 5 months since the problem was reported.

Terry,
For many of most, this problem does not exist. Whether there is an issue depends upon your configuration for your email notification.

If you report settings, perhaps we can help. If you are a recent new owner (within last 30 days), you can contact Acronis direct and get help directly from Acrons--rather than from the volunteer community forum.

James, Thanks for taking the time to respond. I did find an article about deleting a script file and Allowing Acronis to re create it. I was able to resolve the email problem this way. No my backup settings to not follow the setup I see displayed for each in keeping no more than 2 chains. It does create a new full backup as the setup shows but never deletes the old chains like it did before. Any other ideas here? I hate buggy buggy software.

THANKS

vpaul,

Look at the illustrations in this link.

If you want only full type backups, adjust the example in figure 11-Full

If you want full plus incrementals, adjust the 11-Inc and change the 6 and 4 to your needs.

If you want full plus differentials, adjust the 11-Dif and change the 6 and 4 to your needs.

Editing a task can cause the task to perform incorrectly.
Create the task with the desired settings and then do not perform further edits.
If edits become necessary, cease to use the old task and create a correct new task and point to a new empty sub-folder for a storage location.

Grover, Thanks. I had ALL my tasks setup up correctly. Then the email notifications for most tasks stopped. Now the Chains do not work as I had setup. I am gussing the only way now is to re setup ALL 17 tasks from scratch after deleting them and ALL of my backups. It was fairly smooth at one time.
Why is this so buggy?

Never delete backups until you have provable replacements.

If you are sure the tasks are all totally correct,
Try using the clone task feature on one task and after the clone task is created, delete the one original task. Simulate editing the clone to make sure the destination paths & settings are what you are expecting for that task. Then run the task as schedule or manually and I would be interested in the results. I can understand your reluctance to redo 17 tasks.

I am assuming that you are using version of 2012 and the latest build of 7133?

Thanks, I will try this when time allows. I am on 7133. My original tasks do show all the correct settings. They are just behaving badly.

Hopefully each of the 17 tasks point to their own individual folder?

Try moving the backup files related to the single test task and move them to another location so that there TrueImage does not see any backup files for the task in question.. TI should create a new full and restart the count for that task.

vpaul wrote:

So, e-mail notifications worked for a while, then stopped? Is it possible that your ISP changed its outgoing mail settings or login verification settings, such that the e-mail from Acronis True Image is no longer accepted? Or, is it possible that the messages are blocked by your ISP's spam filters or placed in your mail client's spam folder?

tuttle, Nope, the email has always been the same and when I updated to 7133 most of it came back working again. THANKS

Grover, I may run out of space on the 12 TB server first. Yes I back up 12 TB. Eventually I will get this down to just folders that have changed files in them. Hence the need to delete chains automatically.
I may also try Macrium Reflect software. It used to be so easy. I also need an image of ALL 17 partitions. I think I have that covered but it is very hard to test and make sure that the partition images would restore correctly. You have to have hope and a prayer. Lately I have lost my confidence in Acronis.
THANKS

Do you send outgoing mail from a local installed mail client (e.g. Outlook, Eudora) on that PC, through the same outgoing mail server? Have its settings remained unchanged throughout this time, and can it stil send outgoing mail?

tuttle, the settings from Acronis task do not show. Even though I put them in again and again and also choose save as default. The problem seems corrected in 7133. But why would they just dissapear. I have the immediate problem solved, THANKS

vpaul,
You may want to consider doing a repair install of 7133. Restart the 7133 download and choose install. The next window should provide an opportunity for you to choose the repair option.

Doing the repair should have no effect on your existing tasks. The new install will overlay the existing program files but you may want to have a current backup--just in case..........

If I am understanding correctly, the tasks which did not work correctly were tasks created after 7133 was installed and not carryovers from the prior build??
