Acronis 2011 backup now requires days to complete
My wife and I each have Acronis True Image Home 2011installed on our computers and use it for nightly backups to external USB drives since it was installed 16 months ago.
Earlier this month we vacationed for 2 weeks and powered off our computers. Upon returning our computers were powered on and my wife’s computer has continued to successfully perform a nightly backup. However, since powering on my computer my backup (which normally requires 3.5 hours) has been running for days and never finishes. I have tried cancelling the backup as it is running then restarting the computer then waiting till the scheduled backup time when the backup begins but the backup will run continually for days without stopping. For example, the normal behavior of my backup starts at its scheduled time, 11:00PM and finishes about 2:30AM creating a tib file of 180,000,000 KB. Last night I cancelled the backup that had been running for a couple of days then restarted the computer so that the backup would begin normally at 11:00PM. The backup did begin then but it is still running, 19 hours later, and the taskbar indicates the backup is only 23% complete.
I have made no hardware changes to my computer and the only software changes were made via Windows auto updates. I have tried reformatting the external Western Digital drives that I have always used thinking that might solve the problem but it does not.
Might someone offer some guidance to correct this problem? I just want Acronis to return to the highly reliable performance it once provided.

Realizing how much time the chkdsk operation requires, I uninstalled Acronis True Image from my computer, restarted, then installed the newly downloaded software thinking that I would give that a try before the time consuming chkdsk. I am happy to say that last night, for the first time in more than a week, I now have a backup just as I had before vacation. It required only 3.5 hours just as it did before I began having problems.
I sure don't know why the uninstall and reinstall solved the problem and it makes me wonder if/when the problem may recur but for now all is well.
Thanks for your quick reply and solution.

Lee,
Don't give up on checking the disk for errors. Start it before you go to bed and let it run.
A quick check for file errors could be done with the command below. It would only take 5-10 minutes.
CHKDSK X: /F (where x is the drive letter)
later when convenient, do the checking for disk errors
CHKDSK X: /R
This can be done as part of regular maintenance but on an infrequent basis. If your backup has disk errors, this can be cause for restore problems later.
