Acronis "loses" disk during consolidation

I am trying to consolidate a sequence of backups.

The process starts as expected, but during the process I get the message:

"Failed to open backup..."

It seems that somehow Acronis is disconnecting the disk. It just disappears from file manager and will not reappear without a reboot.

There are no other circumstances under which this disk gets "lost". But it is highly repeatable in Acronis. It always happens.

Another wrinkle is that when this happens, it is not possible to cancel the process. Hit the Cancel button and that pop up reappears:

"Failed to open backup..."

Have a uncovered yet another bug in Acronis? (Along with the one that, some years after it was first reported, means that Acronis still prevents my PC from shutting down.)
