Acronis still cannot do SSD alignment?!?!

I am shocked and surprised that Arcronis 2011 Home still cannot do SSD alignment.

I have a windows 7 pro laptop which is not aligned right on the SSD. I created an image using Acronis Boot CD, which includes two partitions (the main C drive and the small windows 7 partition).

When I restore the image the SSD alignment is wrong. I used msinfo32 to check.

It used to be that if you restored first the MBR and then the partition the alignment would be OK, assuming you use diskpar on the formatted drive first from another PC.

But Acronis is unable to restore the two partitions in windows 7 : it treats the C drive as the new D drive, and the old D drive (the small partition) as the new C drive.

So, please tell me how to restore my laptop image so that the SSD alignment is correct. I am shocked that Acronis does not do this automatically, it is quite a severe flaw.

The position around TI2011 and SSD support appears confused. The Acronis website shows full support for SSD's:

If you take the image of a disk that is not aligned, then you should expect ATI to restore as it were if you restore the entire disk (system reserved, system partition, MBR, etc.)

If you want to align your disk, clean it (with diskpart or acronis drive cleanser), then restore first the system reserved partition. YOu will be able to ensure that there is a 1MB offset before that partition. Restore it with any letter except C:. YOu can take this letter off later. Make this partition primary active. Once it is restored, restore the D:=C:\system partition right afterwards with the letter C:\. Keep that partition primary only.

Remember: from the CD, the system reserved partition will have a letter (C:\) and your C:\system partition will have the letter D:

Alternatively, you can use Diskpart to clean and then partition your disk.

Once your image is aligned, backup/restore and cloning operations will keep it aligned.

Thank you Pat. In my initial attempts I was able only to restore one partition onto the blank formatted SSD (that had been diskpar'd on another computer).

Once I restored the small 100 MB partition there was then no room for the main partition. Restoring the main partition would then wipe out the small partition, and windows 7 would fail to load.

Either way, this is a sign that Acronis still haven't thought about SSDs. In my experience, many people purchase an SSD as an upgrade. They already have a working OS on a traditional hard drive, and want to transfer the whole image to the new SSD.

That Acronis cannot detect that the new drive is an SSD is a disgrace. The application should be able to take an image from a moving hard drive and set up alignment properly when the user migrates that image to an SSD. Which failing, if it can't automatically detect (And windows can!) then why not have some kind of SSD checkbox so that alignment is preserved? I think it's shocking that Acronis are so slow on this issue. IT's why a lot of people are using alternative software. It's a big problem, alignment, and Acronis doesn't help you one bit.

I will try the operation you suggest, but I'm not hopeful simply because the software uses the wrong drive letter names which, again, is regrettable. I don't care if it's something to do with Linux....if Acronis care they should find a fix.

What happens is the following: if you restore one partition on the disk without specifying the target partition size, ATI will automatically fill the disk with the partition you restore. Do not select MBR, track 0 by the way. You can restore these once you have restored each partition separately. No need to reboot between these operations.

I agree with your comments that the operation could be easier with SSDs as it is becoming a standard use case. Don't hesitate to use the feedback button.

It strikes me the only way to get correct SSD partitions is to turn to a competitor, Paragon. This is a shame that Acronis simply cannot be bothered to implement a much needed feature. YOU ARE THROWING AWAY BUSINESS GUYS - I like your product, but I'm not going to wait around while you treat SSD customers with some blatant contempt.

Wrong SSD alignment can cut SSD performance by 50%. Why do you think we spend big bucks on SSDs when you don't recognise that we want maximum performance? Honestly, I despair at Acronis for their lack of professionalism on this issue.

I understand your frustation. I am not sure what procedure you used to restore your image. I do restores on my SSD regularly and I am able to restore one partition at a time. As you do this, you have the opportunity to size the target partition. If you don't, the whole disk is used up in that restore...
