Acronis True Image 2014 is not using name entered into SMTP authentication field to log into SMTP server

Thread needs solution

I am reporting a bug and a misleading error message.

When it tries to log into the SMTP server, Acronis TrueImage 2014 does not appear to be using the user set up in the SMTP authentication area, but rather it uses the "From" address and password from SMTP authentication to log into the SMTP server. To reproduce this problem:

1. On the Notifications tab for Backup Options, for Send e-mail notifications about the operation state select Show extended settings.
2. In the Server settings for SMTP authentication, enter a valid name and password to log into the SMTP server.
3. Higher up on the form, make sure that the From address is not a valid login name for SMTP authentication. For example, it might be an alias or an address from a non-related domain.

If you try to send a test message then when Acronis can't log in it gives the error "Failed to send the test e-mail. Not all fields are filled correctly. More details... Check the specified e-mail settings."

In more details you see 0x0064022B+0x0000FFF0+0x8007000A which translates to "the RPC Service isn't started". This is a misleading message which has nothing to do with the real problem that Acronis TrueImage 2014 can't log into the SMTP server. At least if the message stated that Acronis TrueImage 2014 couldn't log in because the credentials weren't valid it would have been easier to debug this problem. Even better would have been that the error message would have stated all of the settings it was trying to use to log in (except perhaps the password).

Solution: I can get around this problem since for my server the username for authentication is the same as my email address, so I can use the same address in From and for SMTP authentication. However, some SMTP servers don't use an email address as the user name for authentication, and this could be a problem since you can't use that user name as an email address in the From field.
