Acronis True Image 2014 won't resize partition on restore

Thread needs solution

Trying to upgrade to new larger HD. TI shows me Partition Size dialog but does not allow me to change the size of OS C: Partition. I can drag the partition bar in the unallocated space but that just moves the partition. Dragging the handles also moves it. If I change the space after number it just increases the space before number so it still remains the same size. I have been restoring partitions one by one but this is the only partition I need to make larger to take advantage of the larger drive. There is currently 355GB unallocated and c: on the old drive is was only 110GB.

There are no error indicators such as the red c I've read in other posts so I presume the partition is ok. I was able to back it up using TI in the first place.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm stuck.

Thanks!

Michael

Don't drag the partition--just the ends of the partitions. Hover your mouse pointer slowly over either end and you will see the pointers change. If wanting to expand into the unallocated space on the right, then grab the right margin end and drag only the end.

My signature links #2, item 1 inside that link will illustrate.

Also, item 2 inside that link provides another possible way to have TI do the expansion possibly. The summary page of the restore shows what changes will be made before the changes are given the go ahead.

If there is a partition on the right of the partition to be expanded, that partition will need to be moved to the right margin in order to provide unallocated space adjacent to C.

These links may also help to understand how to move partitions. These links are for cloning but the partition resize is the same steps.

Thanks for your reply Grover! Your very extensive documentation is a real help in understanding TI.

Regarding my partition resize I have tried dragging the pointer/right margin and it just drags the entire partition. Sometimes the pointer changes to a hand, other times there is no change. But no amount of trying allows me to drag the end of the partition without the beginning coming along with it. Using the before/after numeric fields doesn't work either. I don't know if there is something about this c: partition that TI can't handle. I couldn't find anything regarding resizing in your signature links #2 item 2. Perhaps I wasn't following your navigation correctly.

I'm going to restore the OS partition as is and the following two recovery partitions (Dell's tools and factory restore image). Then I will try and use a tool such as Partition Magic to move the trailing partitions and expand partition C into the available space. If TI was a little smarter it would allow us to resize partitions with a full disk restore or in a clone, the math is pretty basic.

Thanks again for your help!

Michael

Any chance of seeing a picture of what you are seeing when--perhaps a picture of the Windows Disk Management, etc

In order to change the partition size, your mouse pointer needs to be two vertical bars like this example.

In order to make C larger, there has to be unallocated space adjacent to the right.
If yes, even Windos 7 can expand into this space.
If no and there is another partition adjacent and then the unallocated space,
then the unallocated space must be moved left until the unallocated space is adjacent to the C right margin.
