Acronis True Image Home 11 functionality question

Thread needs solution

I am familiar with Backup Exec System recovery. In it I am able to create a recovery point set that makes a full backup of a drive once a week then incremental every other day of the week. Then at the first of the next week it starts over. It will keep 2 recovery point sets at any time. After this is set up I don’t have to manually do anything for this to continue.

I have not found out how to do this is Acronis True Image Home 11. I do see how to create fulls and incrementals but I have to do something manually at least once a week. Where do I find this functionality?

Also - does this support restoring to dissimilar hardware?

Hello Greg,

I understand the question and will try to give you a detailed explanation how to perform the desired operation using Acronis True Image 11 Home.

In order to have one full backup and six incremental backup archives a week so that the program deletes the previous set of 1 full + 6 incrementals automatically you should create Backup Location (see Acronis True Image 11 Home user guide, chapter 3.5 “Acronis backup locations”).

The main principles of backup location organization are:

- automatic naming of backup files;

- addressing to a backup location as to a whole folder;

- automatic selection of backup mode (full, incremental, differential) in accordance with

the backup policy set by the user for the scheduled backup tasks;

- automatic consolidation or deletion of outdated backup files in accordance with the rules

set by the user.

So first of all please make sure you created backup location (Create and Configure Backup Locations -> Create Backup Location -> follow the wizard instructions to complete backup location, e.g. you may use one of your partitions). Then you will see a window with backup rules (you may specify location size quota, maximum number of backups, storage period limits).

When backup location is created you will be eligible for backup policy. Click Operation -> Schedule Task -> Select Backup Type -> In Backup Archive Location completely unfold Backup Location folder and choose previously created backup location (in folder line you will see “No file name is required in this area”), click next and you will see backup policy window.

Below is a step-by-step description what you should do to create one full + six incremental every week after you have created Backup Location.

From main program window click Operations -> Choose Schedule Task -> Choose Create a new full backup after 6 incremental backups (note that first full backup will be created) -> expand Backup Location folder and choose created backup location -> follow wizard instructions till Task Running Scheduling Window, choose Daily and set an appropriate time for the backup to start.

Then from main program window go to Manage Backup Locations and Archives -> Choose Backup Location -> From left pane of the program choose Edit Backup Location -> Set maximum number of days to store the backup 7.

Let me know if instructions are not clear for you and I will be happy to clarify them.

Thank You.

OK - now I went out and bought Acronis but I bought true image 2010 - a different version than what we were talking about. Can you tell me how to do this in 2010? I want to create a full once a week and differentials every other day of the week. After 2 weeks I would like to have accumulated 2 backup sets (a set being 1 full and associated incrementials). The next time it creates a full it deletes the oldest set so that I always have the 2 latest sets but no more than that. --- A different question - does the emergency restore CD need to be created only on the computer that it is intended to protect? Thanks
