Acronis True Image Home 2010

Thread needs solution

I created a dual boot machine using Windows 7 Professional (W7P) and Windows XP Professional (WXP). On one hard drive, I created a partition for W7P and one for WXP. I first installed W7P and later installed WXP and discovered that WXP overwrote the W7P boot loader. I corrected that problem by repairing my W7P startup with the installation disk and now get the dual boot menu.

As I installed W7P and WXP, I took images of each partition using Acronis True Image Home 2010. Everything worked fine until I needed to restore one of my Acronis backups. I get the following behavior:

1. When I boot using my Acronis Recovery CD, I'm able to select my Acronis backup archives on my USB hard drive. I also noticed as I browse for my archive, I see each partition assigned with a drive letter for W7P and WXP.

2. As I advance through the Recovery Screens I can select the correct partition for recovery. When I click Proceed with the Recovery, I get the error "specify location of the volume". When I click Browse, I can reselect my USB backup archive, but my WXP partition is deleted. It appears Acronis deallocated my WXP partition.

3. After I reselect my USB backup archive, I then get the error "Acronis True Image cannot detect volume of "named" archive. I can't get past this problem. I have to reallocate my WXP partition and continue to get the same behavior. The only fix to this problem is to reinstall WXP from scratch.

I have the following questions:
1. Can I use Acronis True Image Home 2010 to archive dual boot partitions on the same hard drive? If you can, how do I restore my archive to my WXP partition? I haven't noticed any problem when restoring my W7P archives.

2. Since each hard drive has one Master Boot Record (MBR), should I NOT restore the MBR defined with the archive image?

3. Is anyone else having similar problems or is there any known issues with True Image Home 2010 in this area?

4. Shouldn't I be able to restore W7P and WXP partitions to a prior state as needed?

5. Does True Image Home 2010 Recovery destroy the Dual Boot Record setup? If I manage to complete a restore, I get the error " system32\hal.dll is missing or corrupt".

6. Do I need to configure the boot loaders to point to a specific drive letter for W7P and WXP? If so, how do I get Windows to consistenly load W7P and WXP to the same drive letter each time?

I realize this is a long message, but I'm trying to understand where the problem is. Currently, I can't use my True Image Archives to restore my WXP partition.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Brandon
