Acronis True Image Home 2011 Impressions from long-time Acronis user - Buggy, not happy
I've been using True Image ever since I got rid of Norton Ghost back in 2004. It's helped me recover from 2 bad hard drives without missing a beat. It's worked great in the past but 2011 has been nothing but a pain.
Background: My Software RAID5 (3x 500GB Hitachi HD's) setup was failing me (another long story involving AMD and Gigabyte). I decided to buy a Highpoint RAID controller so that I could maintain my RAID array. I backed up everything to an external hard drive (twice, to two different hard drives). I installed my RAID controller, reinitialized the drives, and then went to work restoring my old backups. Guess what? I forgot that True Image was installed on that RAID array (on a drive dedicated to programs I thought didn't need a speed boost by being on my primary 80GB SSD). Well, crap. That's my fault. I pull out my trusty boot CD that I made when I installed 2011. It would not work with my wired USB keyboard (Logitech G15) and wireless Logitech mouse. I read on this forum that a new boot CD may help. I download that directly from Acronis. It also didn't work. I read the forums again and it suggested that I find a PS2 keyboard and mouse. I spent 20 minutes fishing through my old crap and found a set. Guess what? My motherboard doesn't have PS2 ports! I stumbled upon a workaround for the USB bug. I found that if you keep pushing a key on your keyboard throughout the boot process, Acronis will detect it. So now I'm finally in Acronis and I'm ready to restore my image. Another bug - it doesn't support my RAID controller even though the website states that my make/model is supported! At this point, I'm just fed up with the process. I go and install Acronis True Image on my primary boot drive - a process I initially considered but vetoed knowing I would wind up with 2x copies of Acronis installed on the same machine - a potential problem. But at this point, I'm out of options. I try installing, but it detected an instance of Acronis already installed. I uninstall that, even though most of the program doesn't exist, and then proceed to do a fresh install. After 4 hours of just utter frustration, I'm finally watching Acronis restore my stuff. I'm hoping my 2nd install of Acronis doesn't cause any problems when the original pops up on one of my drives. I'll uninstall both and do a fresh install just in case. Unless support from Acronis gets better, I'm switching to another alternative with my next purchase.
