Acronis True Image Home 2012 Backup Time Comparison

Thread needs solution

Hi;

I just purchased a WDC MyBookLive NAS and was surprised at the length of time it took to perform my backup. I ran some benchmarks and since I'm not a network guru, I was wondering whether someone could comment on the amount of time it took to run the backup where the target was a locally attached WDC MyPassport (USB 2.0), a network attached MyBookLive and a network share on a Windows 7 PC.

Based on my limited network knowledge the elapsed backup times make sense. However, I'm puzzled by the extraordinary long time it took for the validation step.

I tried to copy the table inline, but it became a mess, so I attached a PDF file with the results.

Thanks for your help,
Rick.

Rick,
The elapsed time of your back ups and validation do offer a glimpse into your environment. Knowing the size of the back ups is also helpful, but not neccessary as it relates to your question.

In general, the time it takes for back up and validation can be affected by many factors.

Network connection type, overhead/bandwidth
Processing power
Interface

.... Are all good examples of what affects back up and validation times. As I am sure you are aware, the network connection type 10/100/1000 can have a dramatic affect on the time needed for the above operations. When you are saving to a shared resource, processing power can have a direct impact on disk I/O depending on the situation. The amount of installed memory can also be a contributing factor as this helps to maintain a consistent data stream. Sometimes its quicker to save directly to a USB devices. Once again, these are just some of the basic factors which can affect back up/validation performance.

Hi, thanks for commenting. I understand that there are many pieces that can affect network performance. I expected network backup to be slower. I'm just wondering whether my results are typical in a standard, non-optimized, out-of-the-box network environment. Frankly, I think the 3X increase in time for the "Backup" phase is quite acceptable. It was the 9X increase in time for the "Validation" phase that I found a bit disconcerting. I was just wondering whether others experienced the same pattern.

The backup is approximately 115GB in size (full backup of my laptop).
The laptop is connected wirelessly at 72Mbps.
The Access Point is connected via Cat5 Ethernet cable to a 10/100Mbps switch.
The Windows 7 computer is connected to the switch via Cat5 Ethernet cable and has a 100Mbps network adapter.
The WDC MyBookLive NAS is connected to the same switch via Cat5E (I think) Ethernet cable and has a 1000Mbps network adapter (I know this is being throttled down by the throughput of the switch to 100Mbps).

Cheers,
Rick.

I'm surprised that no one has ever benchmarked locally attached USB storage versus networked attached storage.

I really don't want to start tweaking my environment if other people are getting similar results.

Anyone?
