Acronis TrueImage 2014 backup won't start if Run when the current device is attached is checked
I am using Acronis TrueImage 2014 to back up my C drive, system reserved partition and Dell Diags partition to a USB drive. This backup was working fine in the past, but this month it skipped the scheduled backup which is set to the third Friday every month.
I am not sure if I just recently changed these options or if this is how they were always set, but when I inspected the Advanced settings in the Schedule I had (only) these options checked:
Prevent the computer from going to sleep/hibernate
Missed backup: Run at system startup with delay (in minutes): 60
Missed backup: Run when the current device is attached.
I don't know why the scheduled backup was missed, but I usually leave my computer on 24/7, so it is unlikely that it was missed because my computer was off.
Even though I have the email notification set to send a notice if the backup fails or succeeds, I did not get a notification when the scheduled backup was missed.
I had rebooted my computer several times in the week following the missed backup, and it didn't start.
I then tried to start the backup manually. I tried by pressing the Back up now button and by right clicking on the Back up now button and selecting Back up now from the menu. Several times the program didn't react at all. The hourglass did appear for a few seconds and I saw usage jump momentarily to 1% in task manager, but the backup didn't start. A few other times the backup appeared to start and it would get to the step that it was estimating the time to backup, but I could see that the backup service wasn't live in the task manager and the disk usage was negligible. This happened twice. After waiting for 10 minutes I cancelled the backup. I also tried to start the backup by setting a scheduled time to a few minutes ahead, but the scheduled time would pass without the backup starting.
In each case there was no email message nor anything in the log files.
After some experimentation I removed the check from Run when the current device is attached from the Advanced settings in the scheduler, and then the backup started when I pressed the Back up now button. During the step where it estimated remaining time, it was obvious this time that it was working since I could see the backup service started and the hard drive had high activity. The backup completed and I got the email notification.
The only other item of note is that before this problem started I ran CCleaner and a few other similar utilities (antivirus and antiadd) and it is possible that one of these utilities cleaned out a registry setting which might be causing this issue. None of my other scheduled backups were affected, but this backup is the only one to a USB drive, and therefore the only one which has the Run when the current device is attached option available.
This is not a critical issue for me since I can leave the Run when the current device is attached option turned off.

Thank you, GroverH, for your suggestion. I see you are a very active member of this forum and your input is much appreciated. However, a change in drive letter is not what's happening here.
1. My drive letters are not assigned consecutively, but rather I have used Disk Manager to assign drive letters. I have intentionally left the low letters unassigned for "temporary" drives. Even if I had attached a new drive, the drive letters for my "permanent" USB drives would not have been affected.
2. Before I found a fix for this issue I was able to open the destination folder by pressing the Recover button on the Backup and recovery tab, which means that Acronis TrueImage 2014 could find it.
3. If it weren't able to find the destination folder, then I would have expected Acronis TrueImage 2014 to put up an error message to the effect that it couldn't find the previous version of the backup and prompt me to locate it. The program was making no response at all.
4. If it weren't able to find the destination folder, then I would have expected Acronis TrueImage 2014 to log this as an error. There was no log at all, not even a backup failure.
