After cloning and disconnecting old HDD, the partitions still showl in My Computer-please help to remove.

Thread needs solution

Hi,
My OS Win 7 was originally installed onto a Hard Disk Drive.

Since arrival of Solid State Disks, I decided to clone the OS onto a newly installed SSD, and to remove the HDD.

The cloning went through smoothly, and I then removed the HDD by disconnecting the data SATA cable and removing the power supply cable. The computer continued to work correctly with the OS now on the SSD.

But the partitions on the old HDD have not disappeared from the list in My Com,puter, and in fact the programs on them can still be opened.

To my amazement, this morning, Acronis TIH, ran a scheduled operation backing up the partitions on the HDD, which have been physically disconnected from the motherboard for more than one week. And here again, the programs in the backup can actually be opened.

Will you very kindly tell me where these 'ghost' partitions reside on my computer and how to remove them permanently.

Thanking you,
Royston Tin.

Royston:

If you cloned your hard disk you got an exact copy of it on your Solid-State Disk, so the partitions that were formerly on the HDD are now residing on the SSD.

Hello Royston Tin and Mark,

Thank you for choosing Acronis Disk Backup Software.

Yes, Mark is absolutely correct. You will receive the exact copy of your old drive after cloning. I'd recommend you to check Disk Management (Start->Run->diskmgmt.msc) to make sure that partitions are not doubled.

Thank you.

Mark and Alexander, hello, and thank you for your response.

I am sorry that I am still not clear on what has happened on my computer, following the cloning of the HDD holding the Win7 system onto a new SSD. Following is a summary of changes produced by the Cloning procedure.

HDD status before I started the cloning procedure:
Disk 0.
System reserved 100 MB
Win 7 C: 304GB
Partition 2 H: 304GB

Disk 1.
Partition 1 E: 150GB
Partition 2 F: 150GB
Partition 3 G: 310GB

Disk 2.
Partition 1 J: 100GB
Partition 2 K: 550GB

After Clom=ning to new SSD, I disconnected Disk 0 from the computer.

The present status of HDDs is aass follows:
Disk 0 (SSD)
System Reserve 31MB
Win 7 C: 37GB
Games H: 37GB

Disk 1.
System Reserve I: 100MB
Win7 J: 299GB
Partition 2 K: 297GB

Disk 2.
Partition 1 E: 150GB
Partition 2 F: 150GB
Partition 3 G: 310GB

It appears that the 'old' disk 0 has become the 'new' disk 1.
Also, the 'old' disk 0 has Cloned into the 'new' disk 0 (SSD), downsizing proportionally.
The 'old' disk 1 has become the 'new' disk 2, and was unchanged by the Cloning process.
The 'old' disk 2 has disappeared.

The Cloning process produced a very confusing and complicated outcome.

I do not mind about anything now, except how to get rid of the duplicated contents of the 'new' disk 1.

Your comments and advice would be much appreciated.
Royston Tin.

So the old hard drive is completely disconnected at this moment?

That being so, as you say somehow you seem to have not only cloned but twinned your hard drive! :)

You weren't running any sort of RAID system previously?

Just to see where everything is, can you access these 'phantom' partitions from a command prompt or from the TI rescue CD?

Do the two Win7 partitions contain exactly the same files?

Something else has happened here as you now have a partition labled 'Games', which you didn't have before.

bodgy, hello, and thank you for your response.

Yes, the old hard drivre is completely disconnected. It was disconnected immediately after completion of the Clone process, and before restart.

No, no Raid system.

The phantokm partitions are accessible.

Yes the two Win7 partitons are exactly the same.

The Game partition was created well after the cloning process, because one of the reasons for changing to an SSD was becaue I had heard that it will help games to run faster.

I am wondering whether i disconnected the HDD I should have, and not the wrong HDD. I will try disconnecting sthe other likely HDD, and reconnecting this one.

I must say that there seems to be a dearth of advice on how actually to resolve my problem. In any case it is not terminal, and a simple rearrangement of HDD connections to the Motherboard may do the trick. As a last resort I am perfectly willing to clean out the computer and do a fresh installation.

Royston Tin.

It looks to me from your break down that you unplugged the wrong drive. If you reread what you wrote you will see that you are now missing:

Disk 2. Partition 1

J: 100GB Partition 2

K: 550GB

instead of your original operating drive.

Yep, I think that's it .... or the old Disk 2 was inadvertently cloned also.
