Always read the instructions!!

Thread needs solution

I should have read them, but now im in a pickle & hope someone can help me. I am using Acronis® True Image Home® version 11.0 (build 8,101)
I know its quite old, but the resolution to my problem might be the same for a newer version. Basically I made an acronis safe zone on a usb external drive before reading that it should be done on a local drive.
So I removed it. But when I try to reboot the PC, it seems that the pc is looking for that external drive & it hangs. I believe that removing the acronis zone, should have removed the start up manager!!! I can only reboot if I turn off that external drive. So Im sure that the acronis start up recovery manager needs to be reversed, but I dont know how. I guess I need to do it in the bios settings as I read that the acronis manager comes into play before windows. Any help help will be very gratefully received
Thanks
Dan

Daniel:

Do you have a backup of your system that was made before creating an Acronis Secure Zone? If so, restore only the MBR from the backup. This will only take a couple of seconds and should fix the problem.

If you don't have a backup then post back and let us know which operating system you're using. Restoring a generic Windows MBR will also fix the problem. The instructions for doing this depend on the OS version in use.

Hi Thanks for your answer.
Typically & unfortunately, I no longer have the back up from before the acronis secure zone was made.
My operating system is XP sp3
I believe I have some software called ubcdwin which should allow me to restore MBR to earlier date if that will cure the problem? Actually I just noticed the UBCDWIN software allows me to restore an earlier registry. Is that the same as restoring an earlier MBR?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Daniel:

Restoring the registry is different from restoring the MBR. You need to do the latter; not the former.

With Windows XP you can use the installation disk and the FixMBR command, as described here: http://helpdeskgeek.com/how-to/fix-mbr-xp-vista/

Yes, UBCD4WIN has a utility for repairing the WinXP MBR. You can also separately download the utility that UBCD4WIN uses from here: http://mbrwizard.com/. These are the specific instructions for XP: http://mbrwizard.com/examples.php#repair

I did what you said & all is good in my world again. Many thanks for taking the time to help out. Ciao
