Are Password Protected backups encrypted, or must encryption also be used?
Hello,
One question I've had that I cant find the answer to is whether
Acronis TIH backups that are password protected, but have "none"
selected for the AES encryption level encrypted at all or not.
What exactly does the backup password do?
Does it only guard the programs access to the backup?
What if some other backup program doesn't care about
passwords, or the .tib file is modified with a different
password such that it can be can be known.
Or does password protection do some form of encryption,
but it is just not the AES standard?
Basically, if I'm going to transport and store .tib
backup files off-site, is password protection enough
or do I have to also select AES encryption?
What about the older password protected backups that
I have from before the AES encryption option was added
-- are they protected is some way?
Thanks.

So I've been backing up images now for about 6 months w/ encryption enabled. I decided to test the recover file feature which allows selective restoral of files from the image backup. I picked a file on the encrypted backup and restored it to my desktop. At no time did the program ask me to decrypt it prior to restoring the file.
So, it appears the encrypted protection feature is not working. I was never aksed for my password.
If some "bad" hacker got into my system, it apears they could do the same thing without ever needing my password.

Trub, if you have an issue with password encryption for ATIH 2017, then please submit a New Topic in the Acronis True Image 2017 Forum where we can try to work with you, and/or submit a Support Case directly to Acronis Support for this issue.
This particular forum is for obsolete Acronis product versions, and this specific topic was last updated in 2011 - 6 years ago for a completely different Acronis product version than the one you have.
