ATH Boot USB stopped working on Toshiba Laptop (C875D-007003)?
I was using a USB 2.0 bootable version of ATH 2014 to backup the SSD on a Toshiba Satellite Laptop. I was using an external USB 3.0 Enclosure (inatech) with a Toshiba 500GB 2.5" hard drive and or a second external USB 3.0 Enclosure (inatech) with a WD 750GB 2.5" hard drive. The Toshiba drive is formatted GPT and the WD drive is formatted as MBR. All was well until I let Toshiba update their stuff for Windows 8.1. For whatever reason now when I boot Acronis with one of the external drives connected to the USB 3.0 port Acronis goes into some kind of a loop checking the hard drive. The only way I can recover is to remove the battery from the laptop! This is the first time ATH bootable has failed me! Any ideas on what went wrong would be appreciated.

I can only suspect an update to the USB 3.0 driver is causing the problem. This may have broken the ATI Boot Media as the Linux kernel used for the media does not have a compatible driver for the device now.

Yes, but it works with the USB 3.0 thumb drive in the same USB 3.0 port? Could it be Fat32 vs NTFS or something going on in the external enclosure that is confusing Linux? That still does not really explain why it worked and then stopped working. Unless Toshiba did some sort of a cloaked update to the BIOS that only affects external spinning hard drives?!

I posted my comment prior to yours about the USB 3.0 flash drive. You might have a point about the drive enclosure. USB 3.0 is still being developed so updates on one piece of hardware can easily effect other hardware. I would say it is doubtful that the upgrade process from Toshiba altered the bios but something certainly has changed.
Are your external drives self powered by their own power supply? I have seen reference to USB 3.0 not working properly when attached devices are powered through the USB port itself. Probably not the case here but worth asking.
In Windows device manager do you see any problems with the USB controller, hub, or devices? If so this may provide some clue as to driver state.
As a last resort you might possibly roll back your update while you look for a solution. Not a good option I know!

The inateck 2.5" external enclosures are powered thru the USB 3.0 port. The 2.5" hard drives I'm using are for a laptop so it should be ok since they draw very little power ...AND... they work as advertised when connected to the USB 3.0 via the inateck external enclosures under Windows 8.1.
Oh well, another mystery that will probably go unsolved. I can live with backing up the system partition to a USB 3.0 thumb drive. I also backup the system partition using the backup in Windows 8.1 to one of the inateck/hard drives just to be safe!

Understand. The recommended solution for USB 3.0 devices which are port powered and exhibit abnormal behavior is to attach a Y cable to 2 ports on the machine then attach to the device. This allows sufficient power to be passed on to the device in question. That is not an expensive solution so you might wish to try it.
