ATI 2010 - Can it do a re-image from spanned DVDs?

Thread needs solution

With ATI 2010, we install and then create the boot CD which is then used to create our image (.tib file structure). This is nice when the image fits on one DVD. But what if the system image is over 4.6 gB DVD wide and won't fit on one standard size DVD +R/-R/+RW etc?

I can't find anything in the help or on the site addressing spanning the .tib over 1 DVD. I agree most folks will put the .tib on an external drive. But there are still some without an external and only have optical drives to work with.

Where are those instructions? Or how do we set up ATI to span the image (and then USE the image) over multiple disks?

Thanks.

It will span the dvd discs automatically by calling for the next needed disc. But be aware that in the restore process, the same dvd will be called for over and over. With an Image spread over 3 DVDs the swapping of the same disc is tolerable, but with 4 or more you'll think that your optical drive tray mechanism will wear out.

OK, wish this was explained clearly. So, if I did NOT save the .tib directly to DVD via ATI but instead saved the .tib to an external USB drive (all one file) I'm sunk. Because there's no way the single .tib file can be split outside of the ATI software. Right?

You can do this too ... when making the Image to the usb drive specify a split size that would fit on to a dvd. The regulars in the old forum would say specify a split of 1492mb (there is some significance of 1492 to USA users). Three of these splits would fit nicely on one dvd with very little wasted space. This method is also known as the 2-step method. The second step is to burn the splits to dvd with your favourite burning software.

With this method, in order to restore the Image, you have to transfer them back to a hard drive.

OK, good enough! This tells me what I need to know. Basically, I think we need to keep it simple: go out and invest $80 in an external drive and call it a day!

Thanks for the tips. Appreciate the time you've devoted to help.

You're welcome ... wise decision on the external. I think that's what most of the regulars use.
