Ati 2012 win 7 pro restore to new hard drive

Thread needs solution

ATI 2012 PLUS     WIN 7 PRO    HP HDX 18

I need to replace my hard drive. I have a complete backup with boot up image on dvd.
Can I use only Acronis to restore onto the new drive or do I need an OS already installed?

Should I do a clone?

Redruth, welcome to these user forums.

If you have a complete backup image of your Windows 7 Pro OS then you should be able to restore this to your new disk drive.

To do this, you should boot your computer using your Acronis bootable Rescue Media so that you are doing the restore completely outside of Windows.  Ideally, you should remove your original hard drive and replace this with the new drive, so that there is no risk of writing anything to the wrong drive by accident.

If you are considering using the option to clone, then please read post: [IMPORTANT] CLONING - How NOT to do this!!!

Thank you. One other quick question, regarding the type of media to use, which is best, USB or DVD?

My personal preference is to use USB sticks for the Acronis Rescue Media as most modern computers allow you to boot from USB and you can update this as needed.  The USB stick needs to be between 1GB to 32GB maximum size and to be formatted as FAT32 to be bootable.  The Acronis Bootable Rescue Media Builder will detect a plugged in USB stick and offer you the option of using it.

One key point is to know how your Windows 7 OS boots, see webpage: Check if your PC uses UEFI or BIOS for doing this, then boot the USB Rescue Media in the same way.
