From ATI7 to ATI2012 Home

Thread needs solution

Been using ATI7 on Windows XP. It allows me to plug in a 2.5" internal hard drive to USB then make an exact copy of the old hard drive that is in use. A few times the drive-in-use would crash. All I would have to do is to slide out the crashed drive, slide in the new copy hard drive, and keep going. We use the laptop while traveling so last thing I want to do is a bunch of restoring!

Bought wife a Windows 7 but I'm not finding that ATI7 able perform on Win7, so it is not installed on her laptop. Her hard drive failed in warranty before I chose a new program. Been reading these posts on ATI2012 and have 4 questions.
1. May I assume it is better to buy the full new $49.99 version as opposed to the $29.99 Upgrade version?
2. Will ATI2012Home allow me to make an exact image of her Win7 in-use hard drive onto another hard drive?
3. Will ATI2012 be easy for her to use so that she can do incremental backups? Or will it be so buggy as I'm seeing on these forums?
4. Or am I totally off track and making this harder than it needs to be? :-)
Thanks!

Maurice,

4. Your value may vary. :)

3. As above - the interface is very different to that in TIH 7, but yes it can be set up to perform a full + incrementals. Why not have a look at the Help guide (link in the left sidebar) to get an idea of what it now looks like.

2. Yes.

1. In your case it will be less hassle to purchase the full version, but you could use the upgrade version. The hassle being that the serial number format is different in 2012 and it won't natively accept the v7 number. What you'd need to do (assuming you purchased the upgrade version) is to install the trial version and then enter your upgrade serial number.

The only difference between a Full, Upgrade and Trial version is the installer itself, and, as far as the trial version is concerned it disables Cloning only makes images for 30 days and the recovery CD will only restore an image. Of course once the 'operational' serial number is entered all components are unlocked.

Be sure if you have ati7 installed that you uninstall it before attempting to install ati2012 (keep the serial number for future reference). Ati went throguh a major change, with a comepletely diff enigine with ati9 and again drastically changed with ati2009 and ati2011. It probably goes without saying but, for unlocked components onthe bootCD, make a bootCD after you have entered your serial number.

Backup/imaging programs are not for the feint of heart. If you want ati to be easy for her to run then you might want to set up a task for her and set it to run manually isntead of on a schedule. Then all she has to do is start ATI, find the task on the list, and select Back Up Now. The task will already have in it, from when you created it, the type (incs) haw many to keep before consolidating, which hdisk is the source and which is the a target, etc.
