ATIH 2011 build 17437

Thread needs solution

Interesting problem. Haven't had any problems with ATIH up until now. I am trying to bu a GoBook XR-1 Toughbook. My boot CD works just fine on any other PC or laptop. On this particular laptop, it goes through all the software starting screens and then gets past the screen to continue booting to OS or ATIH and then on the next screen, it flases something in the top left corner and then screen goes blank and the Caps lock and Scroll lock lights blink until the laptop just shuts down. I have a few of these laptops and it does the same thing on all of them. The same boot CD however works on any other PC or laptop. Could it be a graphics driver issue? How do I change the graphics driver option? I know there's a more recent build, but I don't have time to download it right now.
Anyone seen this before? Thanks in advance.

At the selection screen where you choose to run your OS or ATIH, press F11 and you should get an option to provide some commands. Normally there is a "quiet" command pre-populated. Remove the quiet command, and replace it with "vga=ask", then continue. When you select start ATIH you will see a lot more of the boot process due to removing the "Quiet" command, but you should get to a screen that requests which video mode you would like. Choose something that can be displayed on your display (800x600x32 or 1024x768x32 are common). Once you enter in your selection and press enter, you will get to a "#" prompt and the program will go no farther. Type in "/bin/product" without the quotes at the "#" prompt to start ATIH recovery environment.
You may not be experiencing a display issues, it could be other incompatibilties with the GoBooks. There are other command options that can be used with the F11 startup method that may need to be tried.

Wow! Thanks for the FAST reply! I did what you said and tried tons of diff video options. All resulted in same symptom. What are the other options to try?

I should add, that it gets all the way to the point where I type /bin/product. That's when it locks up.

Start with "noapic", you may not need the "vga=ask" but you can have both

Next to try would be "acpi=off".

Will do. You said i could have both, how do i specify both ask=vga and noapic options?

You can have more than one option at a time, and sometimes you need two or more ie:
noapic acpi=off vga=ask
I believe you can separate them with spaces, but you also could use a ; between them
noapic; acpi=off; vga=ask

Here is Acronis' list of options : http://kb.acronis.com/content/1891
Here is a more detailed list, but not all the commands are supported by the Acronis boot disk.
http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/kernel-parameters.txt

ok, I tried "noapic" and "acpi=off" and it didn't make a difference. Next?

pci=nobios

The version information you provided suggests that you are using Acronis Backup and Recovery v11, not Acronis True Image Home 2011. The lastest builds are 6942 for ATIH 2011 and 17440 for Acronis Backup and Recovery v11.
The kernel parameters should work in either boot disk.

You're correct. Looks like I am using ABR v11, build 17437. Sorry about the confusion. Last try was with all the options you listed. Same result. After typing /bin/product, light blink and laptop eventually shuts down. This is just really bizare to me.

Just wanted to say THANKS for trying to help out on a Sunday. I really appreciate it!

Is there a way to turn off ALL options just to see if the core application will run on the GoBook? It's a GoBook XR-1 with no additional accessories or anything. Just plain vanilla configuration.

I don't think so. Because this could be considered a "recovery/restore issue" you should contact support, and have them help you out. Be sure to only tell them you are trying to boot your system to the recovery disk to do a "recover/restore". ;-) It is possible they could even create a bootable ISO just for your circumstance. I know that with the Home products "Restore/recovery" issues are supported at no charge. Sorry I can't be of more help.
If you continue to test with kernal startup options, be sure to try them individually as well as in combination. the items referring to APIC, ACPI, and PCI are the most common. I have had several systems that required a lot of trial and error to get going, but most have been related to these items.
Good luck, and keep us informed if you get a working solution so that we can share your results.
