atih 2012 won't allow restore to partition or disk with larger free space than original disk or backup

Thread needs solution

Hi

What has happened to this once great product
all this fancy stuff and new interface must be affecting the masic functions
as I happily used ATI Home 10/11 and 2010
i upgraded to 2011 but never got to try it as by the time i got round to installing it 2012 was out.

anyway

I have just upgraded from 2010 to 2012

I have a backup created with 2012 and want to restore it to a 2TB drive
I have made a partition of 320GB
the original disk the backup is of was a 250gb drive the backup was a sector mode backup

In the past i have had no problems restoring backups to partitions with at least the same amount of free space as the orginal data the backup is of
in this case about 102GB of data compressed during backup so the resulting file is about 90GB

all my drives come up red and say not enough space to restore to
even the 320GB brand new clean partition on the 2TB drive
and the remaining 1.5TB of unallocated space also says I cant restore to it as there is not enough space!
This is just a joke

Previously you could restore a backup and resize the partition so it would restore to a smaller drive proving there was enough free space for the data
now it won't let me restorre to larger drives/partitions - Shame on your acronis
I'd rather have an ugly but functional and less feature bit of backup software (BACKUP software yes you are supposed to be able to rely on this stuff to protect your files Huh!)

rant over

anyone please help

I'm wondering if doing sector-by-sector is the limiting factor. Have you tried doing a regular disk mode backup and then when you restore, don't check the box for track 0/mbr, so you can adjust the partition sizes manually and do track 0/mbr last thing.

thanks for the reply

No I'm fairly sure that it is not the problem - at least it was not a problem when I resorted to booting from CD
and tried the exact same process - so have at least got the partition back i wanted
I could not do a non-sector backup because the original disk had sector errors on it and TI refused to back it up that way
(i did not tick the "backup free space" setting by the way so it only backed up sectors with data)

So it looks like aproblem when running the program from windows
just to note that the CD was actually a slightly earlier release of TI 2012 - so it MAY be a change between versions
I'm sure I'll have a chance to test that out at some point but just wanted to get up and running as fast as possible
(as most people will want if they are resorting to restoring backups - unless for testing the backup process that is)

thanks again for your input.
