ATIH Pauses after calculating back-up time and refuses to complete

Thread needs solution

ATIH 2011 has been working fine up until today when I tried to do a monthly back-up. It starts the back-up process, calculates the required back-up time and posts it, then implements a pause and refuses to come out of the paused state no matter what even though the PC is not in a sleep mode.

Rebooting and starting over several times results in the same pause every time. This does not appear to be a system problem at my end as the CPU usage is minimal when examining the HD, ~25% and drops to zero when the pause self-actuates.

The FAQs seem to indicate that this is a design feature but since it's never happened on this PC before, I'm inclined to think perhaps there is a conflict with a Win 7 update from Microsoft?

Need to get this resolved as ATIH is worthless at this point...

TIA for a quick solution !

It's normal for there to be some pause while ati makes a bitmap of the drive before beginning the backup operation -- this is how it can backup while you still work--it keeps track of changes made after the backup started.

But too long a pause or a hang usually indicates a problem accessing a drive -- which can happen for a variety of reasons.

After this happens and yo get started up again, view the log in ATI and see what it reports; it might point to the problem.

Also, if you have the Distributed Link Tracking Client turn on in services, try disabling that off and see if that helps.

Right click on My Computer, select Services, right click on Distributed Link Tracking Client and for properties select disable.

It will not allow me to disable DLTC. I can't find any error log. Is there a specific log file name I should look for?

If you want to view the log of Acronis True Image Home 2011 operations, click Help → View log in the upper right corner of the main window.
To view the logs for a specific period, select the period from the drop-down list. You can select Today, Week, and Month. To view all logs, select All.
To delete a log entry, select it, right-click and select Delete in the shortcut menu. To delete all log entries, select Delete all. You can also save a log entry to file by selecting Save. To save all logs to file, select Save all.

Thanks for the help. There's only one log from a year ago when I installed ATIH. Nothing else.

Randy,

Are you doing a non-stop backup? I am trying to understand what you mean by "pause" and how it materializes itself in the UI.

I use non-stop backup on a monthly basis to prevent excessive back-ups. It has run perfectly fine up until today. I start it for the back-up then pause it after the back-up until I'm ready to run another back-up session.

It goes thru the nomal process of mapping the drive, posts the estimated time to do the back-up and then within about 15 seconds flashes a screen notice that it has "paused". This is easy to confirm by watching the CPU usage indicator on-screen.

Then no matter how long you leave it, (6 hours) it never resumes the actual back-up and the progress bar is only started but never moves from there. I'm thinking that perhaps a Microsoft Win 7 update may be conflicting with ATIH as nothing has changed in this PC?

OK. Make sure you have the latest build installed. NSB is famous for stopping for no understandable reason, and I am not sure there is a fix. The basic troubleshooting is to delete the task and create a new NSB.

NB: If I were you, I would use a regular partition or file backup instead of NSB. You could even use windows tasks scheduler to run the backup as often as you want. If you do that, stay away from consolidation of backups.

Wow, this is NOT good news. I bought Acronis because it's suppost to be reliable... This does not make me happy. I think there was a ATIH update just before my last back-up last month. I did the update and the B/U without issues but maybe this is an aftermath of the ATIH update?

Thanks for your help. Not sure what to do at this point?

What I would do is rely on a regular disk and partition backup (or a file backup, if you don't need to backup your system and apps) to backup my computer. Create a custom backup, for example, with incremental backups every day, or twice a day, or more often, and a new full every week or more often.
The rule of thumb with partial backups is that the number of partials (differentials or incrementals) should never grow so big that you would never find it acceptable to have to go back to your last full validated backup.

Then you can turn autocleaning on, and decide to keep only so many chains and/or have enough backup space. I recommend you have enough backup space for the number of chains you need plus one full backup and some margin.

These schemes are the most reliable schemes with ATI (incrementals or differentials).

In the meantime, keep your NSB backup data while you build up your backup history with that new scheme. When it is old enough, you will simply delete the NSB.

I'm pleased to announce that the latest Win 7 updates has resolved the issue and all seems to be working properly again.
