Am I right in thinking that if I restore/recover a full image backup to my machine from an external drive, after the restore/recover has taken place the copy of the backup will still remain on my external drive .i.e. the backup on the external drive will have been copied back to the pc not moved there. Thanks for any info.

Yes you are correct, it only copies the back up, it doesnt move it.
