Backing up Outlook .PST file.

When I schedule an Outlook email backup the estimated time keeps increasing, currently I usually cancel the backup after about 8/10 hours it reaches well over 2 Days... as during the backup it locks the Outlook.pst file so it is unusable. The Outlook.pst file is around 2GB in size.
Is this normal?
Is there anyway to 'speed' things up and get the backup down to an acceptable time scale?
