Backing up PC and Virtual PC

I'm currently using 2011 on an XP machine and intend to migrate to a Win 7 Pro with XP Mode.

In addition installing on the Win 7, how do I go about backing up some data on the Virtual machine . Is it a separate install, or will the Win 7 install be able to identify and backup XP Mode data on the virtual machine ?
