Backup dual boot system

Thread needs solution

What is the correct way to backup a dual boot system, I have win7 and win 8 on one drive both in there own sections C; and D; . I have installed acronis on both sectors and depending what sector I am in c: could be win7 or win 8 and a system reserve sector. Do you have to back up the complete drive from one sector or can you back up win7 and win8 sections seperatly. The reason i ask is i dont want to damage the boot sector, which I beleave can happen if you do it wrong

You can backup all the partitions separately, but upon restore, you would need to restore each partition in the original order and postition, also the MBR/boot track as well as the disk signature. My suggestion would be to do a full disk based backup of the entire system, as well as the individual partitions. This would give you some redundency as well as flexiblity in your backups. It should not matter which OS you use to do the backup from. You could also do the backup from the Rescue Media CD/DVD/USB Flash drive, and eliminate Windows from the procedure.

I endorse James' suggestion. Create a full disk backup, selecting the checkbox for the entire disk (not just individual partitions). That ensures that you have everything you need, and you won't need to understand how the disk is laid out with possible hidden partitions. A full disk backup captures everything, and is the simplest, safest backup method.

You can also supplement that with more frequent backups of individual partitions, if you like.

Gentlemen, I was hoping you might be able to assist me on this same subject.

I have used Acronis with previous editions for a number of years now, however, the layout of the previous editions is different to the 2016 current version and to a degree, it confuses me.

In the past I have had only 1 OS to back up,which I stored on my 2nd drive. Nice and simple and has saved my bacon on a number of occasions.

The 2016 version just purchased I am trying to do the same with, however, getting nowhere in understanding how I would do this.

Present system is that I have 2x internal discs, C,D. Both of 2T size each. On C I also now have 2xOS, Windows 7 Ultimate plus Windows 10 on C drive and thus I can dual boot either.

Windows 2016 I note has "cloud" facilities. Would I be better off sending my backup to the cloud facility, if so is it also possible to have a backup the old fashion way(on D drive) aswell?

Help welcomed.

Hello Graham, if you are using ATIH 2016 then you should open a post in the forum for that product.

In principle the method to backup your dual-boot Windows 7 + Windows 10 system remains the same - you will need to make a backup image of your entire C: drive (or at least all partitions required by both versions of Windows, i.e. System Reserved partition plus Windows drive partition).

See the following YouTube video on how to backup your Entire PC with ATIH 2016 but remember not to include your D: drive if backing up the image to that drive.

The choice of going to the Acronis Cloud model is one you have to make for yourself - you will need to have good upload speeds to create an image of a 2TB drive in the Cloud, and good download speeds should you ever need to restore from that Cloud backup image.  Cloud is also an annual subscription service and all data is deleted if that subscription is not renewed within 30 days of expiry.

Many thanks Steve for your guidance, much appreciated.

Since my origional request for info, I stumbled across how to backup to D drive procedure. I now have a backup on "D" drive
