backup to network drive
I am using Acronis True Image 2014 to backup files over my home network. It was working but has now stopped (fails). When I go into Acronis and try to setup a backup, a window comes up asking for authentication when I select my network drive's target folder.
The target drive is a usb HD attached to one of 3 laptops. It has a folder that is shared by 'everyone'. When I try to b/u to that folder from either of the other two laptops, Acronis asks for user/password. I have no idea what those could be.
All three laptops can access that folder through file Explorer ... no authentication required.
Can't figure out where the solution lies. Any help appreciated in advance.
If it helps:
W7-64 with usb drive attached.
W8.1-64
W7-32
no HOMEGROUP ... network set up as MSHOME for workgroup. Network discovery is on. File and printer sharing on. Password protection off. Network troubleshooter finds no problems w/ network.

Can you connect the drive to your router? Not a big fan of that, but I'd probably prefer that to having two machines involved with a backup.

Thank you, . if I understand you, it wants the Windows user authentication for the machine it is installed on. I do not use user passwords on these machines. Perhaps I am not reading your comment correctly.

I have attempted to do that from instructions from a CNET article, .. but it did not work. Thank you for your comment.

You read my comment correctly. Are the backups you are trying to perform scheduled backups? If yes this may be of some assistance:

I get the same authentication challenge with any kind of b/u. Maybe the screen shot attachment will help. If I click SETTINGS, I also get the challenge.
EDIT
I may have a solution. Completely uninstalled Trueimage from one of the two machines with the challenge problem. Reinstalled ... and am now backing up to the network drive from that computer. I am assuming that will work on the other one too. If it does, I will come back and close this thread.

Well, you may have fixed the issue but a reinstall may not provide a lasting resolution.

It is possible and likely that there is some hardware or software issue that causes the problem so re occurrence is possible.

If your backup drive is a WD external drive take a look at this link:

I really appreciate your continued support.
It is a Seagate 3TB drive.
True image accesses it just fine ... the way it is currently and always was set up. I did not get the authentication challenge until suddenly. Uninstalling and reinstalling APPEARS to have fixed that.
Could be mistaken, but I think we can consider the issue resolved ... unless for some reason you disagree. Otherwise, a sincere thank you again.
