Backups fail to complete (ti2013 build:6514)

Thread needs solution

Running build 6514
Win7 SP1 Laptop based Job runs to just about complete (3 min remain) then comes up with issue reading/writing to external disk.
Have created new custom jobs (diff & Inc), cleared disk folder out and still same issue. I've set/made sure that LT doesn't time out/sleep/hibernate & setting is off anyway.
Using external eSATA BlacX by Thermaltake with 1TB WD Black SATA (good 3.5" drive) Errors reported are below- see attached.

Failed to open Backup D:\Dell\Dell2242.tib. Make sure the backup locationis accessible and contains all version of the backup. This backup may also be corrupted.

Click Retry to try to read from the same location, click Cancel to cancel the operation.
More information about this error and solutions may be available online in the Acronis Knowledge Base.

Not sure what the issue is, was working fine on previous 2012_7133 release, no problems like this.

I think Acronis is using a newer version of their disk filter driver (SnapAPI- vsflt**) in 2013 vs 2012. There may be an incompatibility with the eSATA controller and the filter driver, if nothing else has changed.

I know you wish to get the full speed out of your Thermaltake unit, but if it has both USB and eSATA connections, you could try the USB connection to see if the problem persists. I've seen issues on one interface and the other may work successfully.

If you have more than one eSATA cable, it may be worth trying a different one to be sure it is not a cable issue.

Also check the cache setting in device manager for the drive, and toggle them to see if a different cache setting helps. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/10392-write-caching-enable-disable…

The changes are, 2012 ver, now 2013 & 1TB drive 3.5" (I had been using a 500gb 2.5") the drive doc & eSATA w/cable are the same.
Believe the drive to be good, had purchased it new & it's less than a year old.

I'll try the USB cable, you may be on to something there. Don't think I'll approach the 2.26gb/min rates I see now. You're right on the full speed, the 135gb/hr transfer rates I'm seeing with eSATA are desirable.

Checking out the cache link you included & will advise on all fronts. appreciate the idea's and reply.

changed the cable back to older USB (away from eSATA). Initial seeing failure again, so I've opted to clear the directory from old files.

I've included a few new screen shots at the top of attached word doc.

Backup is running currently so will update on it's status, this against new directory (empty) so the custom Diff job is working to run a Full.

I believe this may be an error within Acronis's database or scheduler. It looks like it may be trying to run an older backup or to validate an older file, as any new file would have the new file name suffixes appended to them. It looks less likely to be hardware related now.

At this point, I would suggest that you uninstall 2013, then run the 2013 cleanup tool, re-install 2013, and recreate any backup tasks that you need.

Do these errors appear when manually running a backup task, or when a scheduled task is running?

Can you attach a copy of the log from the backup task that is causing this error?

Cleanup Utility: http://kb.acronis.com/content/34876 (if you decide to do the remove, clean, re-install route)

My opt for the cleanup utility, reinstall and see how that goes. I've downloaded it.

BTW the last backup it tried to run, the Diff, that saw an empty directory and was running a Full, failed with 2min to go.

I also have a desktop system Win8 getting Scheduling Service failed to start (continual pop-up), so I'm looking to find solution for that. Once opened Acronis 2013 is running a backup, watching that. Looking around for KB or Forum solution for this one.

Thanks-
Mark

It's Wednesday 5-8-13 and I removed ATI2013 with cleanup utility yesterday, reinstalled it today with success and have just completed a backup Full directed to the E-Sata Thermaltake & 1TB WD black 3.5" . Appreciate the help James.

Must have been something with 2012 ATI install, then upgrade to 2013 (latest) in-place that caused some problems. Believe I have same issue on Win8 machine. I'll see if I can update the status of this to state RESOLVED. One last question if I may, would you have any suggestions for the scenario I have where I bring the Laptop home and have an external disk that backups are directed to (same directory setup to keep the job happy), then at work I have another external disk that's used, on that disk I have a directory with same name. Just wondering if that's the way to 'do it', as the Laptop and it's Job schedule go back and forth and I'd like to run backups weather or not I'm in the office or away (create images, Full with diff's) but wondering if it's getting confused with two different disks...thinking it should see a diff, then not finding it and ready to create another. Sorry for the rambling.

Mark,
RE: intermixing of disks.

When a task is created, the program stores specific disk informtion about both the source and target, therefore, you should not intermix disks for that specific task. Each disk needs its own task. Each disk can store any backup files you wish but each task must be specific to that disk.

Each backup task should be directed to a specific destination folder on a specific pre-determined disk drive (internal/external/esata/ etc).

It is usually best to assign unique drive letters to the external disks before task creation. This helps to prevent user confusion.

You may want to review link #2 below as it covers many of the functions of both 2012 and 2013.

Hello I am new here,
I seem to have a similar problem while using 11.5 and Online (trial) storage.
Would welcome comments before I go to support.
Thanks
