Beginner's questions before I start

Thread needs solution

I bought a boxed version of ATI 2011 PC Backup & Recovery. I am running on w7. I have a 1TB internal HD that I would like to backup to an external 1TB USB HD. I want to backup the total drive including the program & system files so that I can restore the machine in case of a total disk failure. The internal HD has only about 150GB used.

Question 1: Where is the best place to install ATI? Does it matter?
Question 2: If I do an image, will the image take up the whole 1TB of the USB drive, or does it only copy actual content and not unused space?

Sorry if these are obvious but I can't find answers to these in the user guide.

Barry,

1. Download the latest build of 2011 from your account, also download the SAFE media under the 'add ons' tab.

2. Install TI on whichever drive you want, I install mine in a special folder on my second drive, but even if you do this there will still be files installed on your C:\ partitions.

3. If you leave settings at their defaults, which means there will be standard compression applied to the image, TI will only image the used sectors of your drive - so a 150GB would probably take up about 50-60GB.

4. Make sure you make a rescue CD and that you try booting from it - as you have the boxed version this CD is bootable, but it probably won't be the latest build - if there are any problems when booting from the CD post them in the True Image forum, and advice will follow.
