Best Update Procedure

I am running Acronis TI Home 2009 @ build9709. I wanted to go to build 9796, only becaues it is the latest build available. I have been afraid to do the update by deleting the current level, followed by the new update installation, after reading how this may not always work. There were several recovery suggestions made in an attempt to fix the problem.
Tonight, I just read what seems to be a foolproof update procedure. It said to: "Download the Update. Once downloaded, run the installation package and click repair". Are these two seperate procedures? Do I click repair as part of the installation, or do I do the install first, then somehow start a repair procedure? Is this really a foolproof update procedure? I am not a PC guru, just a simple user. Please clarify this procedure so that I do the new update correctly (especially the "repair" part).
Thanks for your assistance.

Hello Charles,
Thank you for using Acronis Products
We would recommend you completely uninstall the previous build from Add/Remove Programs before installing the latest build, as a result you will avoid any probable reasons with installation.
As for Repair option I think you have read some workaround concerning inability to uninstall the program. So when you run Repair option there is a chance that you will successfully remove the program in case there are some issues with it uninstall.

There seems to be some misunderstanding here. I was refering to your Knowledge Base Item 1541, that was updated Aug 6, 2009. My quote clearly states what seems to be a foolproof method to install an update without removing the previous level, which may or may not work. Please refer to this Item 1541, then look at my original questions. Perhaps you will be able to verfy which procedure is the best way to go. If the knowledge base article is incorrect, it should be removed, or corrected, before someone like me with limited experience uses it. If I am reading something into this article that is not there, please correct me. I really need your input to resolve my question. Thanks again for your help. Charles Ranheim

An update is a full version, so you should be able to remove the prior version and install the new without any issue other than neeeding a serial number.

Please read Knowledge Base Item 1541. It will help you understand my questions. Thanks, Charles Ranheim

Charles, I'm reading that KB article as I type, I don't see where you got the details in your first post from or am I misunderstanding you?
There is no need to uninstall the existing version of your copy of an Acronis product before updating it to the latest build
The above is from the first line of the document.
Hmm I wish this forum published at least a page of replies whilst answering for referral purposes.

Charles - FWIW, I updated from ATI2009 9709 to 9796 by uninstalling 9709 with the ADD/REMOVE Control Panel (I may have run the Acronis Clean-Up Utility also - can't remember). Once complete, I restarted and ran CCleaner to clean up any leftovers, downloaded 9796 and installed. I had to enter my registration code which I had saved. I have had no problems with the uninstall/reinstall however, I do not use many of the features (SZ, SRM, Scheduled Tasks, etc.). The knowledge base article and what Acronis says in post #2 do seem to conflict. Windows XP-PRO SP-3.

For some reason, it appears that some who responded have not seen the Knowledge Base Article I have been refering to. It just sounded like this is a simple, clean way to install an update, without having to go through extensive recovery procedures if something goes wrong with trying to remove the previous version (Build). I was asking for clarification of when to "Click Repair" during the installation. Here is a copy of Article 1541 I have made reference to. Has anyone actually tried this update procedure?
1541: Installation of the Latest Update of an Acronis Product
Created - May 22, 2006; Updated - Aug 6, 2009; Access Level - Public

There is no need to uninstall the existing version of your copy of an Acronis product before updating it to the latest build
Introduction
The latest update of an Acronis product can be installed over the existing version of the same product. It can also be installed from scratch on a clean system.
Any update of any Acronis software is a full product.
Solution
Download the update. See Downloading the Latest Build of Acronis Software;
Once downloaded, run the instalaltion package and click Repair.
More information
Installing the latest version or build of an Acronis product over the existing version reinstalls Acronis drivers in the system. Depending on how major the update is, this operation may or may not require the system reboot.
Installation over an existing version will not ask for a serial number.
You can also take a look at Difference between an Upgrade and an Update.
After updating, it is also recommended to recreate Acronis Bootable Media to have better hardware support.
I hope you have all you need to help me with my original question. Charles Ranheim

Prior to updating to b9796, I followed the forum posts that had to do with updating. I certainly am not a computer expert but several others on this forum who obviously had more experience with computers and specifically ATI 2009 indicated the uninstall/install was the best method. I took their advice and it worked for me. You may be successful in doing it as #1541 suggests or you may be able to do it as Post #2 suggests. Article 1541 and post #2 obviously conflict. My own feeling, as a novice, is that if you can delete all the previous 1's and 0's prior to installing the new 1's and 0's, you're safer. If you want to update, you'll have to make a choice (I had read 1541 and read the posts - I wasn't sure, either). What I did worked and I am having absolutely no problems using the basic features of 9796.
Good luck!

Acronis seems to "officially" state that you don't need to uninstall the previous build when you're installing an update. However, many times it's been posted by Acronis (as in post #2) and others that it works better to uninstall and then install.
In my opinion, the best method is to create a backup image of the Windows partition and then try installing the new build. If that doesn't work, you can restore the image, uninstall TI and then install the new build. If that doesn't work, restore the image and either don't update to 9,796 or proceed to start troubleshooting.
Also, as many could tell you, if build 9,709 is working correctly for you, keep using it. Build 9,796 has several major bugs in it and quite a few people have had to revert to build 9,709 as a result.
---
To answer your question specifically... Do I click repair as part of the installation, or do I do the install first, then somehow start a repair procedure?
With build 9,709 installed, start the 9,796 installer and select Install Acronis True Image Home. Next, you should get a screen saying The installer will modify the installation of Acronis True Image Home on your Computer. Press the Proceed button to continue.
That's it. I didn't see any "Repair" option listed.

From what I read in the last post, it sounds like I am better off staying with my 9709 level, which seems to work fine so far. I normally try to go to the latest level, as I do with MS Windows. But, with Acronis, that may not be the best approach. I just did not want to get into the fiasco where I could not completely remove the previous level, and end up with a useless update. I sure would be nice if Acronis had a good stand-alone removal program that worked every time. I am not qualified to go into the System Directories, and make modifications.
One other question: When you delete a running level prior to an update, are all your saved archives still saved? It would be a bummer if they were deleted along with the program itself. My saved archives are on an external HD via a USB port. Thanks, Charles Ranheim

Image files are not removed when you uninstall TI.

Thanks again for all who responded. Now, my only disappointment is the fact the Acronis Knowledge Base is misleading, or even incorrect. I had always considered Knowledge Base information was the last and most accurate information, originating from the people who were involved in developing the code. I hope someone from that group reads this thread and updates the data base. Charles Ranheim

I did install 9796 over the previous using the repair option, although at this time i'm not sure whether it actually said repair or just proceed. no problems with the update.

Trying to update with build #9,796 and installing over an existing installation I get an Error dialog box with the title "The error was encountered while the installation." (OK, my English is not better...). The contents of this dialog box reads (bold text also appears in the original error message): "Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot be continued. In Control Panel, open Add/Remove Programs to configure or remove the existing version of this product."
When I try to remove the product (there is only a removal option under Add/Remove Programs for ATI) through the suggested procedure, I get the following error message (this time in my local language version of Windows XP - the following text is my trial to translate it to English...): "The configuration data for this product is defective. Please call your support team" (that is YOU I guess...).
I'm in a catch 22 here: I cannot remove the previous installation and I cannot install the update over my existing one (build #9,770). Do you have any hint of how I can force the previous version to be uninstalled, or to have the new update installed over the existing version?

Hello Charles,
I’m in the same situation like you. So I read all the postings with great interest. But sorry to say, it’s a mystery to me why Acronis Support doesn’t clear unambiguous this important question! I’m confused, so I hover between the different ways. I’m a German customer, so it’s a little bit more difficult for me to understand these things ;-) But anyway, it’s simply unsatisfactory. I hope, Acronis Support team will give us a definitive answer presently.
Btw could you or somebody else please let me know how to manage downloading the latest build #9796?
When I’ve logged in to the Acronis Customer Support (category Latest Product Updates), ATI Home 2009 build # 9796 is avaible. But I can’t find the download link, or am I blind? The only link there is to Release Notes. And in the category My Account, I only can download (the older) Build #9769.
Thanks for your assistance.

Tjarko,
When you login to your account, if you registered your ATI Home 2009, you should see Product Updates section, under which you have the Get Updates button / link. Clicking on that one will take you to a page titled "My Products & Donwloads" where you should have the Build #9796 and its Download link will appear on the right hand side.

Hello Zvi Lazar,
On the page „My Products & Downloads“ indeed all my registered products are listed, inclusive TI Home 2009. But the Build which there is available is #9769 and NOT #9796. Even when I click on the download button, TrueImage2009.0769_s_de.exe ist possible to download.
Can you tell me why?

I just downloaded and installed the updated version of Acronis True Image 2010. The instructions from Acronis regarding installation, was to, "Run the Installation Package, and then, 'click repair'". I ran and installed the update fine (I believe), but never saw any link to click to "repair". Please advise?

+1, no option to run as a Repair; however, the install seemed to go just fine and Help About verified correct build -- haven't tested it yet tho.
