Calculating and calculating...what is going on?

Thread needs solution

I have TI 2013 and today when my TI started to backup my hardrive, I've noticed that the window says Consolidating backup...Time Left Calculating 102%! I't still doing something but 102%?

The cause of this due to your retention policy settings in your backup task.

If you have consolidation turned on in your backup task, once the conditions are met to trigger the consolidation, after the backup file is written the consolidation process begins. I have seen this (greater than 100%) condition on some systems during the consolidation process, but it is just a cosmetic issue. The actual consolidation process can be VERY lengthy depending on the size of your backup files, and the number of files that are being consolidated during the task. Consolidation reads and writes new backup files from and to the same disk effectively cutting your disk throughput in half during this procedure. If you have large backup files, reading GB's of data and writing GB's of data simultaneously to the same drive is extremely time consuming.

You may want to take a look at Grover's Guide to creating a backup task that uses "cleanup" instead of "consolidation" http://forum.acronis.com/forum/28705. This works by deleting older copies of the backup files (cleanup) instead of combining the files (consolidation). This is much more efficient, and is a less risky procedure as compared to consolidation.

I have used both "cleanup" and "consolidation" task settings, and have found both work well with smaller backup files. As your backup file sizes increase, the "cleanup" method is the better choice.

Thank you for the information...I will reset my settings with the "cleanup" task setting and see how it works. Thanks again for your help.

Be sure to create a new task, pointing to a new empty folder, on your backup destination. Once your new task has performed a backup, you could then remove the existing older task. You can keep any of the old backup files for later restores if necessary, or delete them if no longer needed.

Editing an existing task's retention rules can create some very unexpected results with file names, file retention, and file deletions.

Creating a new task will start a new database entry with the associated backup files being tracked correctly by Acronis True Image.

Ok, I didn't do that...I will start a new task and delete the old ones...thanks again!
