Can I back up one laptop and restore to a different laptop?
I have a new Dell Inspiron 17R 5720 with Win 7 Home Premium.
My previous laptop was Dell Inspiron 6400, with Win XP Home.
I want to use the old laptop as a standby for when the new laptop is out of action. I'm not a techie.
On my new laptop, I have currently installed the bare minimum of programs, and the bare minimum of data. the remainder of my data is backed up to an external HDD.
I have a 30-day free trial of ATI. I want to either:
(a) Back up my new Dell to the HDD, then restore that backup to the old Dell with the same partitions as on my new Dell.
Or
(b) Clone my new Dell to the HDD, then restore that clone to the old Dell, with the same partitions as on my new Dell.
In either case, the old Dell would be completely overwritten, and my old Dell would be identical to my new Dell. (It would probably be slower with Win 7, but it's only a standby, so that doesn't matter.) After that, I would then continue installing additional programs on my new Dell, plus more data files from my non ATI backups..
I'm not a techie, so I assumed the backup or clone would work. The User Guide does not specifically say that I can't restore to a different laptop. So I tried both methods using an ATI live DVD. Both methods would not work. By "not work", I mean that several options would not be clickable when the live DVD was in the old Dell. For the "New Position Location", I can see Disk 1 = external HDD. Disk 2 has the five partitions of my old Dell. But the only thing that I can select is the external HDD. Partitions on the old Dell cannot be highlighted. So the recovery specification stops at that point.
Am I trying to do the impossible?
