Can I restore to a smaller partition?

Thread needs solution

I have a Small Business Server 2008 on which I need to reconfigure disk space. I'd like to create an ATI backup image of the D: drive, move from space from the D: drive to C: drive, then recreate the D: drive and put the D: drive image back on D:. The partition size will be smaller than it was when I created the image but still plenty large enough to hold the actual data that was on D:. Can I do this with ATI? Thanks.

Yes you can. Make sure you make a complete disk image rather than a by partition one. When it comes to restoration time, you will get the choice of auto adjustment or manual adjustment of the partitions.

Again make sure you recover the complete disk.

Check that your recovery CD will boot and see both your machine and all disks that you need to use.

Thanks! To clarify: You're saying that instead of just doing an image of the D: partition, I should image the entire disk, including (in this case) the OEM partition (no letter), the C: partition and the D: partition. Is that correct? Then when I restore, I restore the ENTIRE disk and make the partition size adjustments at that point with the ATI tools. In that scenario I would not be using the Windows Server extend disk function at all. Is that right? And just to add a bit more info, the "entire disk" in this case is a Dell Perc RAID 5 array, 3x250GB for total disk size of 500GB. C: is 60GB, with the remaining for D:. I need to get the C: partition up to around 120GB. OK, let me know if I have this right. Thank you very much!

Correct. In your case you must make the adjustments manually otherwise your System partition (if it is more than 100MB in size) will be auto adjusted to 100MB and the other three partitions adjusted by whatever ratio size they now are.

And, what VERSION of ATI would I have to buy to do this on SBS2008? If you could give me a link to the exact product I need, that would be great. I only need the disk image solution, not a full backup product. Thank you.

Whichever one you buy you will get a complete product. For server OSs you are best off buying one of the ABR11.5 versions. From there you can install just the component parts that you need, viz: Agent for Windows, Agent Core, Media Builder, Console.

I have a feeling you would need to use the Server version, I'm sure I had the workstation installe din 2008 once, but this might have been the beta version, which of course would cover all products.

I would suggest downloading the trial versions (checking the restrictions http://kb.acronis.com/content/2768), to make sure the recovery environment (which will give you just the imaging side of things) will boot your server and see all disks.
