Can I use an image created for a different hard disk? Help plz.

Thread needs solution

Hi, there
I made an image for my OS drive (windows xp) then the after that the hard drive was damaged for some reason. The maintenance guy installed a new hard drive with the same size then he reinstalled windows on computer. Now can I use the Image I created earlier with Acronis to retrieve the status of my damaged old hard disk.

Thanks.

If you created a backup image of the entire drive you could restore it to the new drive. This is a normal restore and done all the time with TI.

If you just backed up files & folders (a data-type backup) you'll need to keep the current Windows installation and just restore the files you need (your documents, pictures, etc.).

I assume by drive you mean OS partition, yah?

And what if the OS new partition has a different size than the back up image partititon. Does partition size has anything to do with that at all?

Thaks for your help.

To restore the OS you need to have either an image of the entire drive (all partitions on the drive) or an image that contains the OS partition(s). For example, you could restore a normal XP installation by restoring just the XP partition. For Windows 7, if you have the System Reserved partition, you would need to restore both the Windows 7 and System Reserved partitions.

As long as the destination partition is large enough to hold the restored partition, the size shouldn't be a problem. For example, if your old partition was 45GB and the new one is 40GB it will still work if the data is less than 40GB. Going from a smaller partition to a larger partition isn't a problem.
