Cannot assign a drive letter to a partition from the backup archive."

Thread needs solution

I have installed True image Home (Build 7133) on a new Windows 7 computer with C: and D: drives. I separately backup the C: and D: drives to an external 3T byte hard drive. I can successfully mount the C: drive from the backup but cannot mount the D: drive from its backup. I receive the message: "Cannot assign a drive letter to a partition from the backup archive." I need a fix for this problem.

Curious,
Can you mount D only without mounting C?
Also try changing the drive letter from what Acronis want to something else.
Are any other partitions included in the backup such as non-lettered partitions?
Try mounting only D.
If it still will not mount, I would check D for disk errors as a beginning start of troubleshooting.

It's incredibly hard to believe that this problem has been going on for so long. I am having the same issue with the latest build of 2013 on Windows 8 64 bit. I cannot mount any partition. It's the old reported problem that the letter is assigned and while it is, I can explore the disk. But after about 30 second to a minute, the assignment fails and the error "Cannot assign a drive letter to a partition from the backup archive" appears.

I have gone through all the old posts on this and the only consistent suggestions of mounting in read or read/write or trying to mount a single letter do not work. All images are valid as per validation check.

However, if I did actually manage to recover some data. I used

1. Backup and Recovery tab
2. Locate the image and click the setting icon to the far right of the image (icon is a little cog)
3. Click on the Recover Files option
4. Locate the file you want, check them and recover.

So all was not lost!

But I cannot mount any of my images. Some created with True Image 2012 and some with 2013. Some created in Windows 7 and some in Windows 8.

Very worrying if we can't trust this software at all.

Martin,
My experience has been that many of these posts relate to interference by the Anti-viurus or malware program. TrueImage has to be on the list of exceptions inside the AV program. Have you tried to disable the AV before attempting the mount?

Also, when mounting, do not mount the non-lettered partitions. Only mount the partition you really need to use. Partitions to mount is a user option when choosing what to mount.

Hi Grover

Yes, I have read most of the post involving this:

1. I had disabled the anti-virus before trying to mount.

2. To my knowledge, there is only one partition in the back up. At least, that is all it allows me to use when I try to mount the drive. See the image below.

I'm not sure what has happened to True Image. It seems so unstable now. I have trusted it, used it and recommended it for many years, but now I simply feel it cannot be trusted. All I can think of that has changes is I have gone to Windows 8 64 bit. Is it Win 8 or the 64 bit part that seems to be causing the instability?

Thanks for responding,

Martin

Am not sure of the cause. It could be those or others. If within 30 days of purchase, open a support ticket with Acronis.

If you have not applied this fix, you should do so. Create a new recovery CD afterwards. I I don't believe the fix is related to your problems though.

Thanks GroverH. Not sure why, but after doing a reinstall, it is now working properly. Very strange, and kind of worrying...

I have a problem trying to mount a backup archive image. The machine involved is Windows 7 64 bit Professional. Malawarebytes and McAfee Total Protection packages are installed. There are no additional security packages installed. Problem is occurring on Acronis True Image 2014. Error message received, like so many other users is "cannot assign a drive letter from the backup archive." Backup archive is contained on Seagate 3TB external drive.
Steps taken: turned off Malawarebytes protection; turned off McAfee protection; mounting only 1 partition (c) using drive letter R; reinstalled TI2014; copied archive to an internal drive.
Now for the most perplexing: I moved the Seagate to my Win7 64 bit Home Premium machine and had no trouble mounting. It should be noted that this machine has TI 2013 installed.
The Home Premium machine has a 3TB WD external drive. I moved the WD drive to the Professional machine and could not mount any archive. The Home Premium machine has McAfee Total Protection installed, but no antimalware.
I think I have covered all facets of this issue, and am of the opinion that there is something else in the Professional machine causing the TI mount failure. However, I am at wits end to come up with anything else.

I will REALLY appreciate all thoughts on this.

Many thanks.

Are you attempting to mount this image to extract some files/folders contained in the image? I suspect that you are. Are there more than one partition in the backup archive image that you are attempting to mount? If so try selecting only the partition that you wish to extract data from.

Some partitions can cause mounting errors (diagnostic/utility partitions, etc.) -- especially on Dell computers. If you have a partition named EISA it is probably the offending partition.

Thank you for your response.

Periodically I will need a file to extract. I can get to them without mounting, but IF I can mount, it becomes much easier.

Here is data of the archive as presented by TI:
Disk 1
FAT16(Unlabeled) Log 31.35GB FS:FAT16 Partition:0xDE (Dell Server Utilities)
FAT16(Unlabeled) Pri 128MB FS:FAT16 Partition:0xDE (Dell Server Utilities)

Disk 2
NTFS (RECOVERY) (I:) Pri,Act 14.81GB NTFS
NTFS (OS) (C:) 218.1GB Pri NTFS

Both of my machines are Dell.
The problem machine has a Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250GB.

When attempting to mount, I am only selecting one partition (NTFS (OS) (C:).

Again, many thanks for your thoughts and I welcome further comments.

One thought I have is that you might try creating a single partition backup of the NTFS (OS) (C:) leaving all others out. This might solve the issue for you.

Another is that you might be able to use diskpart to assign a drive letter to the partition but that is not the best option and would only work if certain circumstances were meet.

Thanks again for your thoughts.

I made a backup of just the "C" drive.

It will not mount.

Still scratching my head and just causing me to go bald!!

Since my software is beyond the 30 day warranty period, I purchased a pay per incident session. After MANY "try this, try that's" the representative gave up and offered to give me at no cost TI 2015. Since I already had 2015 (don't like it because Try & Decide has been eliminated) I declined the offer.

It is so sad that Acronis has deteriorated and like others have said, can no longer be relied upon.
