cannot find version 1?

Thread needs solution

Long time user old acronis. 2014 is not their best year.

Running windows 8.1 and have 5 partition backups (2 created today) on an external drive.

Trying to do a restore i always get the message of "cannot find version 1". Anyone know what i'm doing wrong?

After performing a backup, is there another step i may be missing?

I've never done a validate step because i thought it was automatic.

thanks,
savagcl

Hello Kenneth,
Users often see these types of errors when the location of the back up images has been changed. Moving a file manually, renaming the folder, or a destination drive letter change are examples. Another common cause can be an unsuccessful edit or save of an existing task.

Please try the following:
Rebuild the archives.xml file
Close the Acronis Program

Navigate to
C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Database\archives.xml

The xml file can be renamed or deleted and will be automativally recreated.

It will rebuild the next time you start the program.

Note:
ALL tasks will need to be recreated and repointed to the new or correct storage location(s)

Regarding Validation... it is not always a default action, but it can and should be performed regularly to confirm integrity of your images.

shadowsports,

Thanks for the feedback! I'll give it a try and post if it works.

The solution above proposed by the 'Acronis MVP Volunteer' is invalid.

('kenneth clifton' also wrote above 10 months ago: "I'll give it a try and post if it works'. But, he did not report yet the trial results)

This problem is a software creation error of Acronis... And it is clear: Acronis officials could not yet find a solution to this problem.

The makeshift solution: Uninstall the software that is already installed, reinstall it.  Now, when you start the recovery process, not occur the warning 'cannot find version 1'.

This event is a great shame for Acronis...

Ta Ba, solution proposed by shadowsports is valid and indeed helps those that have 2011-2014 versions of the program. Please see my reply to your post at https://forum.acronis.com/forum/36026#comment-346822 regarding the error "Cannot find version 1".

* In my own case I change the post above (written by 'kenneth clifton'):

"Long time (over 10 years) user old acronis. 2016 is not their best year (Currently I am using ATI 19.0.6027) .

Running windows 8.1 and have 1 partition (C:) backup (created three weeks ago) on an other internal partition (D:).

Trying to do a recovery (starting installed ATI in system partition C:) i always get the message of 'cannot find version 1'. Anyone know what i'm doing wrong?

After performing a backup, is there another step i may be missing? (I can do the verification of the file 'tib')"

* I navigate to  C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Database\archives.xml
   and deleted it (as 'shadowsports' described it).

  Result: negative (so, solution proposed by 'shadowsports' above is invalid)

Note1) I would be glad if you write the solution of the problem, according to this new information;
        2) I read what you type in the link below; I found funny you are recommend to me a support for fee;

        3) I'm sorry for my bad english.

Ta Ba, the message 'cannot find version x' suggests to me that you are trying to restore from an incomplete version chain, i.e. a chain of incremental backups perhaps where one (or more) of the incrementals has been moved or deleted.

To remedy this problem, you should perform a validation of your backup image file, and if this gives the missing version message, take the option to ignore this for each such warning(s) until the complete backup is validated successfully.

Mr "Steve Smith",

First of all, thank you very much for your answer and spend time.

* I choose always "Full backup" and I set it as the default (so, there is no possibility of incremental backup);

* The mentioned warning (cannot find version 1) can not be ignore; so, you can not start the recovery process;

* Backup image file validation process does not make any contribution to the solution of the problem.

As a result, I have never encountered such an incident until today. Very strange...

Thanks again,

Ta Ba.  Check the names of your .TIB (.TIbs) in your full.  They should all be something such as:

b1_s1_v2

if you have any that look like

b1_s1_v2-2

That may be the issue.  If there is a -X at the end ,that ususally means something occured during the creation process (locked drive, hit a bad sector and couldn't press through, USB dropped out for a second, network dropped out for a second, ec) that failed and it attempted again.  In some cases, when this happens, I have been able to still use the backup.  In other cases, not so much.  If you do have one of these, you can try to rename the original

b1_s1_v2      to     b1_s1_v2.bak   (doesn't matter what you rename it, I do this so I know it's a backup of an existing file)

and the new one

b1_s1_v2-2     to      b1_s1_v2    (as it should have been originally).

It may work.  Or, it may make it worse (that's why I said to rename the original to .bak so you can rename both back).

If you have lots of -X items in your backup, then I would call that backup suspect and try starting with a brand new task and a brand new backup and not use the old task anymore.

Dear "Bobbo_3C0X1",

First of all, thank you very much for also your answer and spend time.

* The name of the image file exactly as follows: My partitions_full_b5_s1_v1.tib
  So, a file name creation error does not appear.

* The mentioned warning has come always while I start ATI (installed on C:) for a recovery process.

* I uninstalled-reinstalled ATI; the problem is gone. I do not know if it comes again :)

Thanks again,

Thanks Slava...  and thanks Steve and Babbo.

Ta Ba, hope you've found a permanent solution to your issue.

Ta Ba,

My partitions_full_b5_s1_v1.tib indicates this is the 5th full backup in a series.  The "missing" version 1 would have been My partitions_full_b1_s1_v1.tib, which you may have deleted.

If this happens again, prior to performing the restore, perform a validation.  When performing the validation ATI will still identify the missing version, but you should be able to "ignore" it.  Once you have validated the backup, ignoring all missing versions, the backup will be good for restoring.

The other thing you could do is boot from rescue media to perform the restore.

I believe either solution would have worked and will work if this happens again.

FtrPilot

Dear "FtrPilot",

First of all, thank you very much for your efforts to solve the problem.

* I always store 'tib' files in an external hard drive. I had no information about their names until this day;

* There was 4 files (tib) in the external hard drive, while creating the above mentioned 'tib' file. So, this last file was the fifth file.

* However, the first four files were created by ATI 2014 and these four files have the same name: "My partitions_full_b1_s1_v1.tib". So, these names is not written as "b1, b2, b3, b4".

* When I start ATI for a recovery process, these files are listed under the other. Always first I'm removing unnecessary files, using the feature "Delete from the list". When I get the message of "cannot find version 1", I've done the 'tib' file verification process

* In spite of these, the above mentioned problem appeared... So I think that Acronis 2016 is much more sensitive and its head is too easily broken...:))

Regards,

Ta Ba

Note: I have not tried the option "Boot from rescue media", because there was not a problem with the operating system.
