Cannot recover Server 2K8 or Ubuntu 11.x images on UEFI machines :-(
I am attempting to backup and restore images on a UEFI native HP Slimline PC. Acronis 2011 was unable to even see the disks but when I used the 2012 trial I could see but obviously not backup the disks. I thought we'd found a solution and told my friend to purchase the software.
We were able to backup the OS to an Acronis image with no problems, disk was visible and I selected "full backup" of the drive in question. When we try to recover these images to new HDD everything appears to move along fine until we begin getting all sorts of questions about partitions and where we'd like to put the data. Since this was a full disk backup and I didn't spend time partitioning the original drive I haven't got a clue as to what to input here for either Server 2K8 or Ubuntu 11! Both of these OS were installed using defaults and allowed to use the entire drive. Multiple attempts have all failed to result in a bootable\usable system.
I also tried to clone the drive using a USB dock and the SATA drive. I was presented with a dialog telling me that I'd have to redo my system's bootloader\Grub when the clone was finished. WTF?
I very simply want to make an image of one OS installation onto another drive and boot that drive. I want to be able to take the original drive and stick it on a shelf for safe keeping. I need to do this for multiple OS and various sized drives but for some reason these two OS are giving me fits. Win7 and Vista seem to have no issues which is really weird since 2K8 is based on Vista and I'd think Win7 would be UEFI aware too. I'm helping him do this for software testing in his home in my spare time and this new hardware is REALLY frustrating me!
It appears that UEFI is part of the root of this issue. Acronis 2011 wouldn't see the drives to back them up but when I selected Recover it was at least able to see a C: which when expanded displayed UEFI followed by Ubtunu (this from memory so be gentle!).
Has anyone else seen these issues? How did you get around them? I'm not sure what build version he's running but he bought factory fresh stamped media so I'd hope it's the latest. Thoughts or suggestions?
