Cannot restore the whole disk
Hi
On my pc i have two disks one for the system and one for data.
I use Acronis True Image Home 2009 to make the backup.
I need to restore the WHOLE system disk from the backup (really whole, i mean exactly as it was when the backup was done).
So i try to use the bootable cdrom of acronis and try to restore the disk C.
My first surprise is that i cannot select the option to put data on original disk. So i select option to new disk and select disk C.
So i was very suprised the restore make an error on SQLEXPR32.EXE (the tools does not say what was the error).
So how can i restore the whole disk from scratch ? Do i have to format the disk before doing the restore ?
Please help. It is really really urgent.
Thanks

Also, don't confuse the drive letters assigned under windows iwth the drive letteers assigned under the bootCD, they may be doff. You may have to hdisk size or model number or volume name to tell the diff drives.

Hi
Two partitions on same hard drive.
The media is on a network server.
I have only one backup with all disks data.
Disk C on dos is DISK c from backup.
I do not think the media is corrupted. The error is always on SQLEXPR32.EXE. The restore tells it cannot access the file.
Something else troubles me. I want to make a complete restore and when i did the restore it just copy the files from the backup to the disk.
I want to restore ALL the disk as it was when backuped.
How the restore do that if it does not make a raw copy or it does not format the disk first ? Can you explain ?
Thanks

Hi Eric
I doubt the media is corrupted too but the backup file (.tib) might be. So first you should run a validation task on it.
If the validation fails then you won't be able to restore either partition in full but you will most likely be able to use the backup to restore individual files but not a whole partition restore.
A complete restore of either partition cannot be done unless you backed up using disk/partition backup rather than a file/folder backup in the first place - thats why I asked how you did the backup. If you did a disk/partition backup then you can perform a disk/partition restore and choose to restore C or D or both. In this case the restore will be an image restore which will restore all the files including system and hidden files and the file allocation table. This means that no formatting is necessary.
If you did a file/folder backup then no disk or partition system information will exist in the backup and you will only be able to recover files and folders (as if they were copied someplace)

Eric,
I am a little confused, have you restored the image and when you try to run Windows you get the SQLEXPR32.exe error, or are you getting this error from the rescue CD?
OR
As you restore the image that error comes up?

Hi
Thanks for the fast responses. Now i understand that i do not make the correct backup to restore the whole disk. pfff :(
For the error i restore from the BOOT CD i burnt with Acronis utility. So no i am not under windows.
That is why this error is very strange.
Yes the error comes up when restoring the image....

Eric,
The error is referring to a file TI is trying to read from the file backup.
You said: "I do not think the media is corrupted. " ... Have you actually had TI validate it to see if TI can read it successfully?
