Can't back up Sony VGN-Z laptop

I'm running x64 Win 7 on a Sony VGN-Z model laptop which is equpped with the Sony-provided Solid State Drive 2-drive RAID. (That's two 250gb SSD drives organized as a RAID 0 ... using an Intel RAID controller)

ATI version 13.0.0.6053 starts backing up and after a few minutes (perhaps 10 minutes) simply hangs. I'm speculating that it has to do with the SSD raid.

Is there any special technique or driver required for the backup/restore to work?

I should add that on a completely identical machine except with a standard 500gb hard drive, ATI 2010 Home works perfectly. There's no question the problem is the SSD RAID.

I've attached a screenshot that shows the model numbers of the SSD drives and the Intel RAID controller.
