can't break out from "operations are in progress" message

Thread needs solution

I manually started a backup Dec 23. When I checked my workstation Dec 24 it had this message on the screen. It's still there today.

"Operations are in progress. Please wait. The machine will be turned off automatically after the operations are complete."

I've turned the power off, waited 30 seconds, then back on a couple of times. I keep getting this same message on the screen. Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't do anything (I was hoping to bring up a Task List). F8 to start windows in safe mode doesn't give me any prompts

Any suggestions on how to resume using my PC?

Gordon,

Is this a recent Windows 8 computer?
Are you saying that when you turn the computer back on it still show the message? If yes, it means you are not shutting it down, you are putting it to sleep (which is a standard behavior in recent computers).
Make sure you keep the power button depressed for 5 seconds to shut down the computer. Then restart the computer. It should show its normal boot screen.

Let us know when you can restart Windows normally.

This is a Windows 7 32 bit computer. Turns out it the power button on the computer was set to hibernate, not power off. So I had to delete the hibernate file, then it booted up. Thanks for the suggestion.

OK. Now, to avoid the message you see, check a couple of things for each of your backup tasks:
- edit the schedule. In the advanced settings, make sure that you don't check "wait for the computer to be idle". This setting might delay your backup until the computer shuts down,
- if possible, avoid the on-event schedule triggers,
- in the advanced tab of the backup settings, check the validation. Make sure there is no validation scheduled. If there is one, open the scheduler and verify you don't have any advanced options set up there.

I also had the problem of the message never going away, even after days of running and thinking I was shutting off the Win 8.1 Surface 2 Pro by pushing the power button, even Ctrl-Alt-Delete didn't work.
Thank you Pat for mentioning that you have to hold down the power button for 5 seconds to actually get the computer to shut off. I am running Acronis True Image 2014 and it seems like they are still having this problem.
