Can't recover on HP ENVY Notebook

Thread needs solution

I have been using Acronis True Image since 2004 (Version7) on my desktop PC.
In February 2014, I purchased an extra licence for a new notebook: (HP ENVY 17 Notebook Prod. Nr. F0F63EA)
It had Windows 8 preinstalled, which I upgraded to Windows 8.1.
Installing ATI 2013 on the notebook was okay. Creating Rescue Disk and creating an Image Backup of the System Partition saved on an external HDD was also okay. Validation is okay. (HP ENVY only has USB-3 conection for external storage).
Then I would test recovery of the above mentioned Image. I started recovery, clicked restart when prompted .. and waited. Nothing happened, finally I got a message it couldn't find the Image I just created.
Then I booted from the Rescue Disk. After Notebook booted, I could select the saved Image file, but I couldn't select the C drive as target drive to recover.
System partition is on a GPT Hard Disk. Image backup is on a MBR HDD.
Since Feb 2013 till now I have tried ATI 2013, 2014 aand 2015. All with the same sad result.
In the meantime I've used Paragon Hard Disk Manager for doing Image backup and recovery. Paragon has never failed yet and I'm often doing recovery for different reasons.
I would very much like to have Acronis to work though.

Most likely your issue is that your system disk is GPT.

If you use 2014 or 2015, and do a full disk image of 8.1, you should be able to restore the same backup onto the same disk.
However,
If you want to restore the backup to a new disk you may have partition placement issues due to the original system disk being GPT.

Note that 2014, 2015, 2016 support 8.1 but not 2013..

First: I wrote "Since Feb. 2013 ..." It should of course be Feb. 2014.

Next: Thanks for your answer, GoverH.

Ok, I can forget about 2013 on my Notebook. I don't like the new interface, but that's not the issue for now. Because of this new interface I still use 2013 on my Win7 Desktop PC.

What I do with Paragon HDM is making Image Backup of the system partition (Win8/8.1) which recovers without problems.
I want to do the same with Acronis.

My GPT/UEFI disk is 750 GB and it contains these partitions:
1. WinRE, 400 MB, NTFS
2. NoName, 260 MB
3. Local disk, 128 MB
4. Windows 8/81, now 122.3 GB, NTFS
5. New data partition created after shrinking original Windows partition, now 554,8 GB, NTFS
6. Local disk created by the update to Win 8.1, now 452 MB, NTFS
7. Recovery (HP Recovery partition), 20.3 GB, NTFS

I don't want to do a full disk image of all this. I only need to backup the Windows partition and do the recovery to the same disk. Furthermore, if I do a complex backup, I will not be able to mount the image.

Yolu should be able to create a backup of your Windows 122 GB partitions and then restore the backup onto the same partition and your system still be bootable. Be sure your Windows partitons has a identifiable name on it such as
Win81_C
and then look for that name when you are search for target partitions where the restore is to be pointed.
When restoring, you need to use volume name rather than drive letter.
The restore should be done when booted from the TI Recovery CD.

Strange things happens here.!

As I wrote above I got my new HP ENVY Notebook in February 2014. The whole following year I had many problems with it, including blue screen.
It was even sent back to HP for repair once. Many times I recovered it with the HP recovery disk to its original factory state.
Each time I had it up running again, I installed Acronis True Image, and never once I had succes with reovery of an ATI backup image. And by the way, I allways give my drives a volume name, including the system drive.
March 2015 is now the last time i recovered to factory state. I've even upgraded to Win 10 a couple of times and reverted to Win 8.1 Now I'm staying with 8.1.
I have not had Acronis installed since March 2015 as it didn''t work for me.
When I got the email about upgrading to ver 2016, I decided to try and get some help so ATI could work. After your last input i thought I'd better install the ATI (ATI 2015 build 5539) and test again.

... and I was shocked. It worked! It really worked. I could make an image of my system and recover it again. Amazing. I can start recovery from within Windows and from Rescue CD. I don't know what happened with my Notebook, but I know one thing: If it works don't try to fix it. :-)
Thanks GroverH
