Can't restore... Block bitmap corrupted (0x70016)

Hi there -
I am using the restore function for the very first time. I've got my backup on an external drive.
I boot to the ISO image with a new / clean hard drive and I tried restoring, which always ends up with the following message. I am not sure if this is a problem with the backup source or the target drive, nor how to resolve this. Any thoughts? Is there another way to perform a restore?
Operation "Recover" started
Pending operation 11 started: 'Recovering partition'
Operation with partition 'C:' was terminated. Details:
Block bitmap corrupted (0x70016) Tag = 0x89D94B01B483DCF8
Block bitmap corrupted" module="7"

Hi Pat -
I always run a verify on the backups, and I have it set to stop/fail the backup if there's a corrupted sector. But I will follow your advice and re-verify it.
As to your second point, do you mean to run chkdsk on the target hard drive, or on the external disk on which the backup resides?

I ran a verify on the backup (since I loaded acronis on a new machien to do so, it looks like it's verifying the original full backup and not the incremental after).
Ran chkdsk on the new drive and the one on which contains the backup - no problems found.
Any other thoughts?

John,
I assume you did run chkdsk with the /R option. This is longer, but it is important.
Try to mount the archive instead of restoring it. If you have an error when you mount it, you have a corrupted backup. If it mounts, your archive is OK. Then the issue is with your target disk.
If it doesn't mount, you could try to move the backup to another disk, validate the copy (do not delete the original, as sometimes, copying an archive can corrupt it), and try from that disk. If this doesn't help, you are stuck.

OK - chkdsk run with /R. everything OK.
i took a different, smaller, older backup and restored to the disk as well, and it's not the disk, for sure.
I validated the backup in question and after several hours, Acronis tells me it's validated.
Tried doing a partition restore from within Windows to an external drive. It tells me:
Failed to prepare operations. Error code: 9 'File system error is found' with extended code: 458,774 'Block bitmap corrupted'
I tried doing a file level restore and everything works just fine with a few issues where it says it can't restore come *.dat files which look like their home is in /tmp, so I don't care about them.
How can the backup be corrupted if Acronis says it's valid? How can I trust that any time I do a backup, that's it's non-corrupted when it tells me it's valid.
What else can I try (could I set it to skip over any errors)?
If I do a file level restore to restore my C:\ (system) dive, I am assuming it won't boot, correct?

If you do a file level restore to the same disk, it might boot just fine. On a new disk, there is little chance. Upon restore, if it doesn't boot, you will have to repair install with your Windows installation DVD.

I am going to try this, but still don't understand how a backup can be corrupted if Acronis tells me it's valid. Is that a bug, or a common occurence?

There are some rare occurences where the validation goes through, but the restore doesn't work. A validation confirms that the image's integrity has been preserved. A validation doesn't confirm the image fidelity. If for some reason the data didn't make it to the backup the right way, or if it is restored in a way that compromises the installation, the restore might not work as expected. At backup time, ATI will have still calculated its internal checksums at backup time, and the validation will have been fine.

So, what good is a backup that is not valid, when ATI says it's valid?
It seems when doing a file level restore, it's choking on some .dat files. ANyway to remove them or skip them during disk level restore?
What is image fidelity? This is the first time I've heard this term here being used.
Argh.

When ATI creates a backup, it includes regular checksums in the archive. When you validate, it recalculates the checksums and compare with the ones it stored at backup time; it also traverses the chain of backup (full + incremental). In other words, it verifies the integrity of the backup.
It doesn't compare the data in the backup with the data on the disk: this is what many users believe it does, wrongly.
Frankly, validating a backup is the best way of getting confident you can use a backup, short of actually testing the restore.
If you use the recovery CD you should be able to recover only certain files and folders by checking them. Another way would be to mount the archive in windows, copy/paste all the files you want to the USB disk, then boot with you Windows Installtion DVD and use a command prompt to xcopy all your files back to C

I guess I don't understand then, if the backup is validated, what could be the cause of my error? And if validation validates the backup, and I can't restore it, what good is having a backup that I can only verify by restoring it? Seem counter productive since there is not enough time in the day to backup and restore...
Totally confused....

If a file system corruption was not detected at the time of backup (so that it would perform it in sector-by-sector mode) but this corruption is enough to prevent successful recover, it may be your case.

yeah, but i had run chkdsk on the disk before and after the backup, so that can't be it...

We have seen on this forum cases where chkdsk /r doesn't see disk issues that ATI sees. It is not necessarily your case. If you have disk diagnostics software from your manufacturer, use it.
We are running out of options anyway. If your disks are without any issue and you cannot restore you can try to move the archive to another disk, validate the copy.
Beyond that, you won't be able to restore your image or fix it.
You might be able to mount the image and extract files from it, but this will not restore your disk's programs and OS if this is a system disk.

I have the same problem with TWO backups.
This problem has been reported more than once, but a solution, if it exists, has not.
Is there a solution to this problem? I have performed all the steps outlined above.
If there is not a solution to this problem, I will not be buying ATI 2012 (which I was just about to do).

I have a similar issue:
I tried to restore a validated backup to a virtual machine on vmware workstation 8 and I get the following error message:
Error Operation with partition 'C' was terminated.[Details:)Block bitmap corrupted (0x70016)] Tag =0x89D94B01B483DCFA

Are you doing the validations form the same os as the attempted restores? I.e, for the boot CD. If validation works in windows but the bootcd wont' resatore with this error meassage, then can you put the backup on a diff kind of drive-- e.g., if it's on a usb, put it on a ide or sata, and then try the backup from there?
If this allows yu to restore, then the probl is a driver issue with the bootcd drivers -- iirc, this kind of situation ahs been described before.

I had such a problem. It is possible that someone will come in handy this information. For the future: 1. It is necessary to make sure that the version of TIB, which restores the same or later version that archived disk partitions.
2. MBR must meet the disk partitions that are recovering. If you have a MBR recorded that, for example, disk partition C: 100 gigabytes, it must restore the disk partition C: 100 gigabytes as is. If you try to change the disk partition during recovery, and in the master boot record is written that disk partition is equal to 100 gigabytes, it would be a error: "Block bitmap corrupted (0x70016)".
After the restoration of disk partitions, you can change the disk partitions using Acronis Disk Director. After changing the ADD will write the new "correct" data in the master boot record.
