Can't restore while in Safe Mode?!

Thread needs solution

I've used Acronis for several years and this is the first time I've had to restore (yes, I should've tried this earlier, but I never got around to it) and I discovered this nasty surprise: my Windows 7 got corrupted with a bad video driver. I had a recent Acronis image, so I thought I'd start in Safe Mode and restore from there. But when I tried to recover, Acronis gave me a "cannot restore because Acronis Scheduler is not started" (or words to that effect). I then checked my services and discovered I could not start the Acronis Scheduler while in Safe Mode!

I could not believe this--a backup application that relies on a scheduler that cannot start while in Safe Mode?? Meaning you cannot restore from Safe Mode because your computer is unable to start Windows normally--the very cause of the panic that's making you reach for your Acronis backup?? Am I missing something here?

I also had an Acronis "boot disk", but it just booted up with three options, none of which was "restore from backup"...again, I must be missing something here.

Can someone help clarify?

Thanks.
Carl

Your Acronis TrueImageHome bootable media CD was designed to handle a restore when Windows is none functional.

The bootable medial CD is capable of restoring your backups.

check this link. Item #3 should suffice if you want to restore drive C only;

or if your backup is a full and complete backup of everything on your disk, then #2 will also suffice. Caution #2 is only correct if your backups is in fact a backup of everything on your disk.

Thanks, Grover--these look great! Did you write these guides to overcome the limitations of Acronis True Image? Shouldn't these backup programs "just work"? I mean, most people will reach for their backup only during a crisis, when all else has failed. And to your backup app throw up its hands because you're in *Safe Mode* is unexcusable (why the restore feature needs to consult with the "scheduler" is beyond me--I can direct it to the backup I want to restore!).

I'm going to seriously reconsider paying Acronis for anymore upgrades in the future.

Most do--if you know how to use the program which requires some preparations in advance of the crisis. A backup and restore program is much more involved than many realize--even for the experienced user. A backup and restore from any vendor will require some degree of prior use. TrueImage is no different in that degree. Each vendor has their own differences with each having their own pluses & minuses.

Thank you for the compliments. Yes, I tried to fill a need for those who might need the assistance offered by the guides. It is much too late to wait for a crisis and then try to find out how to use the backup program. The TI bootable media recovery CD is an excellent tool for the recovery of a failed system. There is no need for the use of Windows Safe Mode to recover a TI backup. Many programs won't run in Safe mode as not all the needed services are available in safe mode.

Do yourself a favor and get acquainted with the program and be sure and restore some test files from the backup onto a test folder on one of your hard drives--just so you know it is possible and to confirm that all your hardware is visible to your backup program.

Good luck.
