Clone 1tb drive to 2tb drive

Thread needs solution

I am using the latest build of Acronis Home 2010. Operating system Win7 ultimate.
Then i attempt to clone my 1Tb drive to a blank 2TB drive it tells something to the effect that "the clone TO drive has to be large enough to hold the data being cloned from" Indicating that for one reason or another it is not seeing the drive as large enough even though it is TWICE the size..
IT will clone to a 1 Tb drive so its cloning ability is not the issue since it works fine for all drives up to and including a 1TB... What about larger drives
The large 2tb drive is good as i have loaded win7 on it to make sure that it was a good drive and i then deleted that partition so it is a totally blank drive.

Acronis has one of the worse support systems in the world for a product that is this good.

My question is " Since the 2010 Acronis does not seem to fully support a large 2tb drive ( or so it seems from my exerience" CAN Anonoe tell me whether or not the 2011 versions do?
Or maybe shed some light on the ONLY issue i am having with the 2010 version.

One option you could try is to download the "bootable media" option from your Acronis web account. This is an alternate rescue CD when burnt to CD. This is the 2010 version with newer drivers.

As this type procedure is best done from the Rescue CD, if you tried the 2011 version, you would have to buy it as the trial version does not have cloning enabled on the Rescue CD.

I have not tested whether this will solve your issue with the 2TB drive.

I "clone" hard drives all the time (nearly once/week), since TIH 2009, including 2011. Never had a problem going to a larger drive. To the best I can remember, you can actually clone to a smaller drive, provided the source drive is using less space as the destination drive.

My biggest problem is I always need to do a reboot now to clone a drive. This started a few months ago, after hundredths of clones while Windows was running. I actually restored a Win7 image with TIH 2010 that I know cloned while Win was running. That clone also needed to reboot. I haven't changed any hardware, really confused why now I need to reboot.

yes, it is possible to clone to a smaller drive. Sometimes it requires some adjustments of the partition size in order to get TI to allow the clone. Perhaps support can answer your question regarding the need to reboot. I would believe that a reboot would be necessary all the time if cloing an active system.

Any clone from within Windows still boots iinto Linux to perform the clone. The clone is not performed by any Windows software.

Up until recently i have never had an issue with using Acronis cloning to clone my drives as a way to totally back them up from one drive to another. I have been using Acronis for the last 6-7 years and other then (1 Time) when Acronis would not work due to incompatability with video drivers ( Issue was known by Acronis but not posted).

Anyway i can clone from my pc drive that is 1TB to another 1 TB drive. OR to a lesser size drive that is large enough to hold the data that is on my 1 TB drive.

It doesnt matter whether i make and use a bootable (CD or floppy) the results are the same. It still comes up with " data not moved, pls ensure that target disk is large enough to hold data" This is a clear Indication that
the 2010 version is seeing the 2Tb as smaller than it is.
I KNOW that true image cloning works fine when i clone from my pc's 1TB drive to another 1 Tb drive. So the software is working just that it seems to have a problem if one is cloning TO a 2tb drive. And im betting that if someone tries to clone a 2Tb drive to anything smaller ( as long as it ( Target disk) has space to hold data that is on the larger disk That it will NOT allow you to clone a 2 TB disk regardless of whether is is the FROM disk or the TO disk.

Support is just about worthless from Acronis as they seem more want to seel than answering tech questions when there is an issue....This question has been sent to support but due to zero response i wanted to find out if anyone else has been sucessful in cloning a 2 tb drive.. Whether using the 2010Version or the 2011 version.

PS there is nothing in anything in user info regarding limits of disk PHYSICAL size...

In my previous posts, I forgot to mention when I "clone", the source is always a data drive (not the boot drive).

I know for a fact I've been able to "clone" a 640GB data drive to a 2TB drive, no problem. The fact I now need to reboot (guess to Linux) makes me suspect I'm using different s/w than when Windows is running.

When you say "This is a clear Indication that the 2010 version is seeing the 2Tb as smaller than it is", did you notice the size TI reports to your destination drive? When you do "clones" do you get to the point you need to reboot? Are you able to do the 1TB clone while Windows is still running?

I agree with you, Acronis is just "using" us to find bugs in their s/w. Most questions are unanswered on these forums. Since we can't call Acronis, the least they should do is try to answer our questions in exchange for the beta testing we're doing for them.

I am having exactly the same problem. Have cloned for 2 or more years, but just installed 2tb drive and gives the same error message. Cannot get to reboot point. However clones to 1tb drive usb connected same as always. I also tried the bootable media and would not work. Anyone have any suggestions??

Sigmon. What version of acronis are you using? That may be the difference as from all indications the 2010 version probably does not support a 2 TB drive whether you are cloning to or from that drive.

For me i cant afford to not have my system backed up on another drive but i also dont want a program that wont work when i need it to. This latest issue with cloning a large drive is just another chink in an otherwise great program.

I bought a 1.5 TB drive and am going to clone to it and see if it ( acronis 2010) will clone to that large a drive and if so then that pretty well proves that it ( the 2010) just WONT work with the large 2 TB drives.

In the end i may have to buy the 2011 version and see if it works with a 2 tb drive. But right now i will stick with the 2010 version IF it works with the 1.5TB drive

Charles, I am using True home 2010 and I downloaded the latest release to see if that helped. It did not. Please let me know the outcome of your tests.

Sigmon.

I just connected up a 1.5TB drive to my pc. Using the 2010 version of Acronis ( with latest build) it DID work just as we would expect. Meaning that it did clone the 1TB drive to the new 1.5TB drive.

This pretty well means that the 2010 version ( regardless of build) will NOT work with a 2TB drive....
You, I and any others that might decide to get the large 2TB drives are going to be forced to buy the 2011 version of Acronis. And even then i am not all that positive that it will work BUT at least if it doesnt then there would be Acronis support for 30 days and I seem to recall that they have a money back guarantee if you were to buy the software and find that it didnt work as expected....

I'm running the latest version of 2011 and know for sure I can clone a 640GB data drive to a 2TB drive. These are both SATA drives, not USB. I just wish I could clone while Windows 7 is still running. Now, all of a sudden, without any hardware or s/w changes, I need to boot into DOS (thought could be Linux).

Josh, Looks as if Norm has answered our question. Now which is cheaper - a 1.5 tb drive or the 2011 version??
You would certainly think they would release a 2010 patch to run the 2 tb drives.

Oh for sure the 2011 version is cheaper but thats not the issue. My initial posting was whether or not the 2010 version had supportede the 2 TB drive. I sort of suspected that it might not as 2TB is right at the limit to a lot of things and once it breaches a certain BIT size not all things work well together. That is one reason that Win7 has the 64 Bit and not just leave everything at 32 bit. Allows for larger drives and moves data quicker....

But it does say that the 2011 certainly does support the 2 TB drive.
Personally i always just clone the drive and go do something else while it is doing its job. And it has to do that in a NOn windows environment which means rebooting to the non GUI interface ( many refer to it as DOS but its not really DOS)
I guess at some point i will make the switch to the 2011 version and my 2TB drive will just be a cased drive to store stuff until then.

Win7-64:

My disk cloning problem is similar - Using both ver10 & ver11 boot disks on three different computers and trying to clone from 1TB to 1.5TB or 1TB to 2.0TB, acronis, when everything is lined up in the final stage for cloning (recognized the target as 1.5TB or 2.0TB), reports that the target is not large enough or there are errors on the drive.

The target drives are new and tested in the seagate interrogation process.

Hello all,

Thank you for posting. I will do my best to help you.

I did not find any issues in our internal system about limitations of cloning very large hard drives. I would recommend to check the following KB articles for additional information just in case and if you have any issues please contact our Support team directly. I am confident that we will be able to fix any issues:

1. Cloning Laptop Hard Disk

2. Acronis True Image Home 2011: Cloning Basic Disks

If you need additional help please let me know.

Thank you.

Most of the above responses are old. I tried everything to clone a 1TB WD drive to a 2TB Seagate hybrid drive without any luck. I finally got it to work by opening the computer and hooking up the new Seagate drive to the SATA connections (rather than trying to clone through USB). As soon as I had it connected via the SATA connections it worked fine and I was able to clone to the new Seagate drive (which works fine). Lots of reading and trying various ideas until I found out how to make it work.
