Clone Drive

Thread needs solution

I have TIH 2009 and have cloned a drive from DVD recovery disk. Is it better to do it that way or
can you clone the C drive with the system up and running? I'm running Vista Home.

Thanks
Tom

If the disk being cloned is a data only disk, this can be done from within Windows.

If the disk being cloned is the system disk, then your chances of success is greatly improved if you do the cloning when booted from the TI Rescue CD. This removes Windows from interference.

Additionally, your best chance of success will be if you remove the old drive and install the new blank target drive in its intended boot position. The old drive can be placed in a external enclosure or docking station during the cloning.

Following the cloning, the new drive must be the only drive attached during the first bootup following the clone.

Thanks Grover, I thought that was the case. I have cloned off the rescue CD with no problems but was going to
try it with the system running given there is the option to do so.

Yes, the capability is there and it may be possible. When this is done, the system must reboot and use the same Linux drivers as the REscue CD does. The success rate from within Windows is not nearly as good as with the Rescue CD and Acronis does recommend that the CD be used when working with the system drive.

If the computer happens to be a Lenava/Thnkpad laptop, then the method I suggested is the only successful way to achieve--when using TI Home.
