To Clone or Not to Clone- non system disk
Hi all,
Have an external drive with just data (no OS) - and want to make a copy of it to a different larger drive. Is cloning the best option?
Thanks

The Acronis MVPs here all recommend not to clone but to do a full disk backup and restore, and so do I. There are many reports on these forums of cloning disasters but that isn't to say it won't work It's simply that backup and restore is a lot more reliable and produces the same result.

In addition to what was Earthling has written:
Or, if your question is meant to ask whether a backup program is necessary, there are several programs which will do a better job of
Windows copying rather than copy with Windows.
Replicator is one such copy program which will copy and provide any error information.
This would be a straight Windows type copying form old disk to new disk.
New disk would need to partitiooned and formattted in order for the copy to work; wherease, a restore from backup (using TrueImage) would restore to a blank unformatted disk.

For such file-baaed backup jobs, I use Robocopy which comes free with Windows. It's command-line, but easy to learn by following on-line explanations of commands. I run my regular Robocopy backups via .bat file.

To start, this is my first time to post. If I'm on the wrong "page", let me know. Can I migrate a good Windows XP os to a hard drive that has a not so good XP os but lots of folders with files?

An on-line forum typically has sub-forums covering specific subjects, and within that each thread covers a specific topic or question. You posted in the ATI 2014 sub-forum, so if you aren't using that software version then you're in the wrong place. We will naturally base our answers on the 2014 version, so anyone using a different version may receive less-than-ideal answers by posting in the wrong forum. You also posted into an existing thread that has nothing to do with your question. Choose the right sub-forum, create a new thread, and provide more information about your system and issue.

Terry,
If you make a disk option backup of the good XP system and restore to a not-so-good XP, all data on the not-so-good sytem will be overwritten with the files from the good xp system. If both are different computers, the restore may not work as the hardware will differ.
If you want to restore from one computer to another computer, you will need the PLUS pack installed on good xp system so additional drivers can be added while performing the restore to the "not so good" system.
As MVP Tuttle indicated, start a new thread or ask the Moderator to move your posting.
