clone problem

Thread needs solution

Can't select destination drive when trying to clone one 1Tb drive to one 2Tb drive. Both drives are external SATA drives and connected to USB2 ports via a laptop running Windows 7. I can see and write to both drives using windows explorer.

Any Ideas

I don't think you can clone from external to external, I think it has to be either internal -> external or external -> internal.

If you try to make a disk image do both external drives show up?

Are you using the automatic method or the manual clone method and are you cloning from within Windows or the recovery CD?

Are these data drives or does one have an OS on it?

I'm working from within Windows using the automatic method. The source drive has a Windows XP OS and the destination drive is a new drive with NTFS format. Both drives are visible using windows explorer and will accept new files written to them.

I'm not sure how to make a disk image.

First, try booting from the recovery CD and see if that then sees both external drives, this way Windows can't be accused of doing anything strange.

You might need to use the manual method of cloning, but as I said above I have this vague suspicion that cloning external to external doesn't work.

How much of the drive you want to clone is used or to put it another way, how much free space is there??

I can verify that on my system cloning from one external to another external drive works fine. I can clone from any USB to any USB drive or from any USB to eSATA or Firewire drive without issue.

It is possible that Acronis is having issues identifying the 2TB drive as a fixed disk (vs removable), or there may be other issues on the drive

On thing to try would be to use the Windows command line utility "diskpart" to clean the 2 TB drive before attempting the clone again.

Another option would be to use the Acronis tool "Add a new disk" (from the "Tools and Utilities" menu in the "Disk Management" section) to effectively do the same as the diskpart clean. (Start by using the MBR layout option for the 2TB disk.)

Here is an illustration on how to make a disk image backup when booted from the TI Recovery CD.
This is applicable for all the newer releases of TRueImge Recovery CD.
