Clone Process does not allow selection of destination drive

Thread needs solution

I bought a 3TB Western Digital External Hard Drive. When I attempted to clone my C:\ drive, I could select the source drive (C:\) with no problem. When I tried to select the external drive as a destination, all the drives were "grayed out" and no selection of any drive could be made. As a test, I cancelled and tried selecting the external drive as the source, and was allowed to do so. When I tried selecting the C:\ drive as the destination drive, it was "grayed out"

I previously cloned the same 1.5TB internal hard drive (before it was nearly full) to a 1.0TB Western Digital external drive with no problems.

I then updated my Acronis True Image Home 2012 to the latest build. Same result when I tried to clone the internal hard drive.

Any suggestions

Hi Richard,
In this case, the preferred method for back up is a Disk Image Backup. A disk image back up is safer and more flexible than cloning. To ensure the safety of your data, I recommend the following:

-Perform all operations using an ATI BOOT CD
-Perform one or more full disk image back ups
-Ensure you can recover files from an one of these images

In regards to your issue, target disk grayed out. When cloning it is usually best for the target drive to be unallocated. There may be other factors affecting your ability to select a particular destination, but again a disk image back up is recommended.
