Clone to USB drive not working under Windows 7

Thread needs solution

I am trying to Clone my internal SATA drive on my laptop to a SATA drive connected through a USB port. I have no problem getting Windows 7 to see the external drive, format it, copy files to it, etc.

However, when I try to use True Image Home 2011 to Clone my internal drive to the USB drive I am unsuccessful. It tells me that there are either errors on the drive or that it isn't large enough to clone to.

The source drive is a Seagate ST9500420AS drive with a capacity of 500 GB.
The destination drive is a Seagate ST975042 0AS drive with a capacity of 750 GB.

I have run CHKDSK on both drives and it found no errors.

I have followed all of the instructions on this forum. I tried to Clone from the Windows Acronis application, and when that didn't work I created a Bootable CD and tried to do the Clone from the CD.

Does anyone have any ideas what is going on?

Your best results will be if booted from a TI Rescue CD. Also suggest that you read the cloning item in my signature below. Read the item in gold below and also index item 3cc. 3-cc may not exactly match your hardware but the methods are still applicable.

It is recommended the location of the target to be in its intended boot position. (Replace the old with the new) and place the source disk in an alternate location. If your computer is a Thinkpad, it is best that the target be in its intended boot position.

I'm using the reverse clone technique you mentioned. It appears to be working, although it is estimating about 2 hours to clone the 500GB drive. That's probably about right given the amount of data that has to be transferred over the USB bus.

For now let's consider this a working solution since I couldn't get this far doing it the other way. If anything comes up during the clone I will post the issues.

Thanks!
