Clone versus regular backup

My hard drive consists of 5 partitions: c:, d:, e: and f: and g:. For purposes of transferring the partitions to a new computer, is there any difference between a clone and a regular backup of the 5 partitions? As far as I can tell, the only difference is that the regular backup gives one the choice of which partitions to backup.

Also note that with cloning you get one copy, the clone. If you make backups you can store as many of them as you have room for on your drive and then be able to maintain a more robust backup protocol. E.g., sometimes your drive goes wonky and you ant to restore to get it back to a prior non-wonky state. However, the most recent backup was made after the wonk appeared and so won't help you get rid of the wonk. In that case an older backup would be helpful.
