Cloned my HDD to SSD now have an extra partition with low space

Thread needs solution

So I just cloned my HDD to a brand new Kingston Hyperx 240. I was only using about 120GB of 1.5TB on my HDD after a major cleanup.

Followed all the instructions. Everything worked perfectly and the Windows 7 based PC booted fine from my SSD.

I've just noticed that I now have a balloon pop-up warning me that a new "F" partition "System Reserved" is running low on space. It's only 28.7 MB large!!! I'm guessing this extra partition was cloned during the ATI process.

I've searched on this topic. Some say it's related to Win7. But only 28MB??? Do I have a more serious issue?

Thanks for the help!

Can you post a screenshot of your Windows Disk Management console?

System Reserved is typically the partition containing the boot information for Windows. Typically on a MRB disk this partition should be 100MB, should be the first partition on the system disk, and should have a 1MB offset on a SSD. Finally it should not have a drive letter.
You can rearrange and change the size of your partitions when you move from a spinning HDD to a SSD in this post.

Danor,

Is your PC a brand name PC?

I see that somehow there is a 21GB partition that would appear to be doing nothing. If this partition didn't exist before, it can be attached to the partition labeled Gateway (Just realised your PC is probably a Gateway PC).

This might be solverable by Windows, but more easily if you have a 3rd party disk uitlity. The other option is to make a complete disk image of your system and then restore that image which will allow you to play about with partitions.

Colin, thanks for the response. Yes, it's a Gateway FX 6840.

You are referring to my old "C" drive before I installed the SSD. I plan on reformatting that drive and moving back all my data that I backed up before making the image. That's all sitting on an external drive.

My concern is with the new SSD HyperX and that very small partition.

Appreciate all the quick help so far!

Danor,
Use Window Disk Management and use the "change-add" drive letter option and remove the letter F from the partition so it will not contain any drive letters--which is the "norm" for Recovery partitions.

What happened here is that ATI scaled the sizes of your partition proportionally to fit on your PC.
You should do a backup, then a restore following the instructions detailed in my post above and leave the recovery and the system reserved with the same size they had before.

Also, after the restore using the recovery CD, DO NOT boot your computer with both disks in it.

Pat, GroverH, thanks for the input.

I think I will go with a combination of your suggestions. I must have clicked through too quickly during my ATI cloning process.

I will see how things go in the morning.

Thanks again

OK, that was easy. I decided to go with the add/remove drive letter and now it's "hidden"

Thanks again

Danor,
In your attachement of disk management, if disk 0 was the original system disk,
As MVP Pat L suggested in post #6, you really do need to do it over and get the 2 small partitons to be the same size as before. In your configuration, the only partition size which is adjustable is the larger Gateway.

Some additional help can be found in signature link #1 below and located index item #1-WW. This guide will illustrate how to
It was created for prior versions but still valid for the newer versions.

Your current status is that the system is working under normal conditions but may not work if in a recovery via the Gateway provides choices.
